Rest In Peace

I’m not really sure how to start this, so I’ll just say it. Melissa passed away last Sunday, July 17, after some complications with what we all thought was a very minor lung cancer. She was not just my former boss, but my adopted-by-her big sister, and loosing her hits especially hard as it happened way too soon. I met Melissa in 2009, when I moved to LA after graduating from a Photography School on the East Coast. We’ve worked together since then, and I owe her more than I could possibly ever repay. I think a big reason that a lot of you are here on this site, is her brutal honesty in rega ..read more

Model Cara Latoszewska https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbecara/ & Hair & Makeup Artist Virginie Hullaert hullaertvirginie.com I have had the pleasure of getting to know Babeth Dupuy over the years through Facebook and Breed! Although we have never actually met, there is a kindred spirit union between the two of us that I know, if we lived closer to one another, we would be very good friends. We are close in age, we share very similar tastes…..from Bowie to St. Laurent…….and we never seem to run out of inspiration to share with one another. I am honored to call her a friend, even though ..read more

CHOOSING INTERESTING LOCATIONS
The Breed

Choosing your location can be one of the most important challenges facing the photographer. More often in my situation the client usually relies on me to find a suitable location. The choice of where you shoot will definitely affect the outcome as a wrong location can be disastrous. The location has to add value to the shoot as well as conveying the style and mood of the shoot. You need to understand the brief and then be able to tell that story. Often I will use polar opposites to convey the story. For example, I will shoot a beautiful evening gown in an old deserted building or in a dodgy pa ..read more

By Tom Ludwig Every time I travel to Berlin a visit to the museum of the Helmut Newton Foundation is an absolute must on the agenda. Therefore I was very excited to go see the latest exhibition “Helmut Newton. Legacy” during a recent trip. This retrospective was originally scheduled to open on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Helmut Newton on October 31, 2020, but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Around 300 works are on display, besides some of the well-known icons around ha ..read more

I woke up one Saturday morning in late July 2020 in my Brooklyn apartment and I said out loud, “I don’t love this city anymore”. And just like that, there it was. Although it had been a long time coming, I fell out of love with NYC just as quickly as I fell in love with it. It was over. The love affair had ended. Living close to some of the best beaches in South Africa you can never get bored. The beach gives you so much opportunity and so many challengers. This day started at 05:00 and fortunately it was warm and the sea was just the right temperature. For those interested I took my Nikon D4 with 2 lenses, my 24-120 f4 and my 70-200 f2,8 - no lights this time The early morning the light is so amazing and gives a great warn touch to the images. Even though the sun is very low in the sky, the light is still quite hard and you need to choose where and how you shoot very carefully. The beach can be very ..read more

Making a STMNT

I was fortunate enough to do some work for STMNT Grooming Goods, a USA company who has recently opened up in SA. Their imagery is fantastic and predominantly Black & White which for me is definitely my favorite way to shoot. The main shoot was to be studio based with crisp B&W images showcasing their unique style with a bit of behind the scenes showing the stylist and products being used. We took a chance and asked if they would allow us a bit creative freedom and after seeing some our mood board they agreed. We took a chance nd it paid off. Keeping in mind their current studio style ..read more

I don’t know how I stumbled on this podcast on YouTube but there it was! I remember not being in the best place personally in my life and I can tell by listening to my own voice, still there’s some really useful information that both Dana and myself share on this podcast. I especially thought the advice on breaking into the industry is really valid. So I thought I’d share a little blast from the past since most of the information is still relevant and could be useful to some of you! Listen on ..read more
