After Zambia, we crossed into Botswana, one of the richest countries in the region. Their currency, the Pula, holds it’s value against the USD quite well. It is quite surprising to learn that most of the animals are free to roam anywhere. There are basically no fences separating properties, and cows are as free range […] The post Chobe National Park appeared first on Africa Tours - Budget Safaris Packages | African Overland Tours ..read more

It is quite surprising to learn that most of the animals are free to roam anywhere. There are basically no fences separating properties, and cows are as free range as they can be. The population is very proud of their meat quality, which is an important part of the country’s exports. In Botswana, the wildlife is very treasured. They are also free to roam, but are only really protected in the national parks. Poachers can be shot on sight afte ..read more

Devil’s Pool Victoria Falls

The first time I saw pictures of Devil’s pool I thought to myself that those people must be insane! Then I read about it and also wanted to go. And so I did! For those that never heard of this Devil’s pool, it is located in the edge of Victoria Falls, in Zambia. Just the concept of a natural pool at the edge of one of the World’s biggest waterfalls is frightening, but living that experience is surreal! This activity can’t be done year round for safety reasons. It’s only open when the water level is low enough not to push people overboard. On the other hand, it is also not a cheap experience. To do a safari in Africa, more than being an unique and unforgettable experience, is also to relieve childhood, and to watch “Lion King” in real life. There is no better music for someone doing a safari than “The lion sleeps tonight”. When the first chords are heard, everyone gets ready to sing! To do a safari is to understand that Simba, that little lion that so tragically lost his father, means Lion in swahili, and Rafiki means friend. Also Hakuna Matata, “such a wonderful phrase”, really means “no worries”. Here in Africa that is really the motto. We bring with us thousands of problems fr ..read more

After the Masai Mara, the expectations for the next safaris were very high. Two days after leaving Nairobi (Kenya), already on the overland truck with another 20 people, we entered the Ngorongoro conservation area (Tanzania) before the sun came up. The mist was dense, but we could understand we were on much greener land than before. It seemed as though we had entered the jungle. Ngorongoro is the the largest unflooded, intact caldera (collapsed cone of a volcano) in the world. Known as the Eighth Wonder of the world, many scientist suggest that before its eruption, this volcano was larger tha ..read more

I’m travelling on the truck that has been our “home” for the past two weeks. We are about to leave Malawi, a country that is still among the poorest of Africa. As I look through the window, I feel the noisy wind coming through and see. I see the dry landscape and red soil, the plastic that litters the roadside. There are almost no cars passing by. Only people walking past or on their old bikes. I see many mothers with kids on their backs, tucked in blankets of african colors. We go past villages with homes made of red bricks, where I see kids, many kids, to whom I wave. Usually they wave firs ..read more
