With organizers still waiting for confirmation of “public” funders for this year’s race, the board of directors for the World Triathlon Championship Series Montreal race has decided to cancel the race. “Unfortunately, as of last week, we did not receive sufficient confirmations from public funders regarding the WTCS to complete a responsible budgetary planning,” WTCS Montreal president Patrice Brunet wrote in an email. “Applications have been filed, but with most formal replies not having been received yet at this late date, our board is not prepared to move forward with such a big risk, as pu ..read more

Here are 6 ways to do so: 1. Become a drafting pro: Practice swimming in tight packs during training to get comfortable with the physical contact and turbulence. How I learned to take off my digital watch before it became “like a handcuff”

I was trekking in Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia in January and had been without cell service for days when my Garmin suddenly went crazy. I’d just emerged from a deep valley onto a high, barren amphitheatre ringed by glacial mountains when the iPhone buried in my pack connected with a tower somewhere and my watch started to vibrate, a cascade of notifications tumbling down its face. “The Green Metro line is down in Montreal,” I told my husband. Montreal, 10,500 kilometres away. Well, how about that? Clearly, I needed to know. I am smitten by my Garmin, a Forerunner 955 Solar that ..read more

Yes, triathletes can drink coffee guilt free. Here’s why, and how it will boost your performance
Triathlon Magazine Canada

Thankfully for millions of runners and triathletes around the globe, coffee can be enjoyed guilt-free as part of a healthy sports diet. Coffee contains nutrient-dense plant compounds called phytochemicals that promote health and offer strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies suggest coffee can actually improve heart-health. That said, high coffee/caffeine intakes can trigger pre-existing cardiovascular conditions such as atrial fibrillation. And, needless to say, coffee brimming with sugar, flavorings, cream and coffee whitener is not a part of this conversation. Scientifi ..read more

What is a hookless rim Here at Triathlon Magazine, we were first introduced to hookless rims a few years ago when Zipp launched its new 808 and 858 Firecrest wheel sets. (See below.) Zipp raises the bar with its new 808/858 Firecrest wheels Wheel manufacturers have been moving in this direction since the big push towards disc brakes allowed them ..read more

41 years strong: Growing a community-based triathlon
Triathlon Magazine Canada
by Tracy Clark

Making decisions that fly in the face of a prevailing trend is often seen as unwise. But to paraphrase author James Baldwin, those who say it can’t be done may be interrupted by those who are doing it, and succeeding. These days, triathlon headlines are dominated by big races, and even bigger series – like the Ironman Pro Series or the Professional Triathletes Organisation’s T100 Triathlon World Tour and, of course, the Olympics. But no one gets their start in the sport at these races. Instead, it’s the community races, like the 41-year-old Peach Classic Triathlon in Penticton, BC that is ofte ..read more
