Good day, we have a place where there are 5 raised garden beds that were over grown (mostly a type of tall grass with extensive root system, old cat and dog poop) we dug out all the garden boxes and is the soil still usable? If we sift it as pictures? There are also some white needs that looks like potting mix possibly submitted by /u/RefrigeratorOk377 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

We've had a few abnormal cold snaps which I think stunted growth a bit here in North Texas 8A and I'm wondering if it would be better to let these plants grow a little larger and bushier before allowing them to fruit. Am I on the right track? submitted by /u/I_Can_Haz [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Can these be salvaged for a new crop?

My husband tried having a garden, but admittedly didn't know much and eventually gave up. He ignored his planting beds for quite some time after this. Today we decided to rip out the old garden beds for a new yard project and I found these. I have done ok with some vegetable gardening in planter boxes, and would like to do some onions. However I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff? Can I use these? Are they still viable? If so, what should I do to get them started? submitted by /u/Amenable2Mischief [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Looking for advice

Looking for advice. I planted 3 raised garden beds this spring and used a local bulk supplier for compost/top soil mixture. Also added a few bags of miracle grow garden soil. I mulched with straw from tractor supply. My tomatoes started curling and looking off as well as the squash. I did some research and found that it is probably herbicide damage from the compost or the straw. I immediately got as much of the straw as I could out of the gardens and I called the compost supplier and they said it it composted cow manure that they have shipped in but couldn’t give me any info beyond that ..read more

Does it make sense to adjust pH of water for soil grown vegetables??

Hi fellow gardeners, my first year of gardening, so sorry for maybe a dumb question... My only option to water my plot at community garden is using water from river, I've checked pH levels of water from river and it has pH value of 9.27. Does it make sense to adjust pH of water every watering or no? I was wondering that maybe the soil pH will balance it out as water will be absorbed into soil or am I completely wrong??? Many thanks for your help! submitted by /u/NickTheRedditor [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi! I am trying to grow radishes. They are starting to grow well. But I only planted them with about 3 inches of soil(my mistake, I am new at this!). What should I do? Hope they keep growing? Try and transfer them into more dirt? Thanks! submitted by /u/NewAbbreviations5275 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Tomato seedlings turning yellow?

I think I had the light too close initially but now fixed. I don’t think I am over watering (I wait until the weight of the tray has gone down significantly before watering again). They germinated on 3/31. I did one half strength liquid fertilizer about a week ago. Potting mix is 3/4 peat moss and 1/4 vermiculite (I now use 2/3rd peat moss 1/3rd vermiculite which seams better). Any ideas what’s wrong? Thanks submitted by /u/mtnjamz [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Pea Tee Pee

I'm trying to build a Tee Pee for my kid that will have Peas growing up the side of it. I'm a little lost as to what is the best way to put string around around it. It needs to be open on one side, so my kid can crawl in and out. But my string keeps coming loose when I try to put a knot in, so I'm at a loss for what kind of knot to use. I also can't pull it too tight, or the Tee Pee falls in on itself. I think once the peas grow up, they'll help stabilize the whole thing, but the string needs to be strong enough to hold them. I'm going to plant a bunch of peas either, because I don't wan ..read more

Sweet potato leaves!

I’ve planted a few sweet potato plant (can’t remember if they are Covington or Beauregard). I got them from a big box store. Since I’ve transplanted them, the leaves have changed from green to this purple. I’m still getting new growth and the leaves still feel healthy, they aren’t crunchy or brittle or dry or anything. Is this natural or is it something I should work to correct (over watering, nutrition etc)? submitted by /u/jay_ken [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
