How to increase privacy beautifully?

I'm about to purchase this second & third floor condo, and the big 40 feet tree who used to bring tons of privacy to the big windows on both floors broke down during a storm two weeks ago. Considering a new tree would take years to grow, does anyone have suggestions on how I could make the space as intimate and one with nature as it was before? I would rather not see my neighbours, but still have sunlight coming throug https://preview.redd.it/5p62w7gl4bvc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=8503d6b2bd60f6868aafb3b4da7aa111a3aae8f0 submitted by /u/High-Breed [visit redd ..read more

Is this a French drain?

So as title states. I have seen people draw or build a construction where they use piped water through either perforated or non-perforated to a big hole in the ground filled with plastic empty containers or just big rock/gravel. This is to catch water before it then later can run back slowly to the groundwater. Is this construction called a French drain also or is it something else? Someone called the construction a catch basin but it was much much smaller then what I'm thinking of. submitted by /u/IQognito [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Arborvitae for part sun privacy screen?

Can anyone give any insight into whether arborvitae will grow well in part sun? I have an area where I want to plant a privacy screen that gets some direct sun in the morning, but is shaded by a mature red maple in the afternoons. I would say that the light is dappled more than deep shade in this spot, but it’s definitely not 6+ hours of direct sun. If arborvitae isn’t well suited for these conditions, do you have any recommendations for something better? I’d prefer an evergreen. I had been considering Skip Laurel but I recently got a puppy and I read that the Laurel is extremely toxic, so it ..read more

Tree recommendations for this center garden

Hello everyone I would like to plant a tree, for a centerpiece in this garden I am planning. I am located in zone 7a, southern NJ. Soil is naturally acidic where I am. It gets a lot of midday sun. I was thinking something along the lines of an eastern redbud, as I don’t want something that will be massive, but definitely something to draw attention to the garden. I also had thoughts of a river birch, or even a willow of some sorts. Something to cascade over the garden but won’t provide too much shade. submitted by /u/grg46 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Leland cypress brown spots

We planted a row of Leland cypress across the back of our yard several years ago. Most are either dead or dying, from fungal infection maybe? What are our options for replacing them? I know green giants are highly recommended. We have a small woods behind our house that separates us from a major highway but is deciduous, so we are looking for evergreen coverage and we have zero concerns about height. Is the disease something that can hide in the soil and pass on to the next thing we plant there? submitted by /u/Previous_Injury_8664 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

We don’t have the money to replace it or anything and it obviously needs to be repainted. The obvious choice is black but I was wondering if anyone had other ideas! submitted by /u/k42murphy [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
