Since we moved to the Isle of Skye I’ve been fielding lots of enquiries about how to do so! Moving to Skye is a decision and process that’s unique for everyone, including us, but I’ve decided to write about the most common steps and what you can expect if you’re looking to make the move yourself. To note, while Skye is one of the larger islands in Scotland, it’s a small space in the grand scheme of the UK; of course, it’s not possible for everyone who wants to move here to do so, and I’m not saying everyone should. But if people are genuinely looking for information about moving here, then I’m ..read more

Why We Moved to the Isle of Skye

As I write this, it’s drizzling outside, and the mountains we can usually see from our living room windows are obscured by mist. But there is the beginning of a rainbow forming as the constant shift in weather continues. Four weeks ago, we were packing up the contents of our entire house, which had definitely grown by quite a lot since we’d moved from Leith in Edinburgh out to the suburbs of Musselburgh. That was not an unusual move for many people our age who had growing families and couldn’t afford to buy a larger house in the east of Edinburgh. However, this move was definitely out of the n ..read more

32 Things to Do in Oban, Scotland

Oban is one of the first places people told me to travel when I moved to Scotland. They said the town itself is charming, it’s easy to get to by public transport and there’s tons to see in the area. They were all right! The town of Oban was founded in the late 18th century, and its name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic name for Oban, which is An t-Òban, meaning The Little Bay. Oban is known as the “Gateway to the Isles” due to its location as the main ferry terminal to many of Scotland’s western islands. You can also easily head north to Fort William or south into the southern part of Argyl ..read more

Hiking Beinn na Lap – My First Munro

I didn’t know what a Munro was before I moved to Scotland, and now I’m determined to climb them all… Beinn na Lap was the first Munro I climbed and the start of a journey to climb 282 in total. Munros are mountains in Scotland that are at least 3000 ft, or 914.4 metres and are on the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s official list of Munros. Some of these are simpler climbs of around 3-4 hours, but others are much more challenging. Sometimes multiple Munros are climbed in one day too! The tallest Munro is obviously Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the UK. But some are basically rock climbs whe ..read more

It had been a while since I’d travelled solo and a long time since I did so in Scotland. I was looking for somewhere remote and unique. Somewhere away from the busyness of home life and the city, where I could reconnect with myself and with the beautiful landscape of Scotland. And I needed it to be affordable and reachable by public transport. Not the easiest list of boxes to tick… Except that, I managed to find the place that did so, and I’m SO glad I did. Loch Ossian Hostel is run by Hostelling Scotland, who I’ve worked with in the past. This trip was just for me, however. It had been on my ..read more

It may be many years since the last Harry Potter movie was filmed and even more since the books were written, but the lure of visiting Harry Potter locations doesn’t seem to have subsided. New generations are discovering Harry Potter, and people continue to flock to Harry Potter filming locations in Scotland. I wrote about all the Harry Potter locations in Edinburgh a while ago, but I recently realised it’s probably about time to write about all the other Harry Potter locations in Scotland! I’ve visited the majority of these and have plans to go to the others in the near future. Many are amazi ..read more
