The idea of workwear is (to some) not worth investing in due to obvious reasons: Why spend a great deal of money on something you only wear at work? Is this investment really necessary? The wife and I (in our first joint photo shoot!) are wearing shirts and blazers gifted to us from Arthur Shirtley, a young British brand specialising in quality workwear. And when I say quality, I mean exactly that: 100% cotton shirts and 100% silk blazers that have been made to an amazingly high standard. I'm wearing the Fitzrovia blazer and the Somerset House Fountains shirt, and Cather ..read more

The Gingham Shirt: A Menswear Wardrobe Essential

It's been a long road coming out of the winter months but I think we can finally wave goodbye to the cold dark days and look forward to warmer, longer, sunnier days allowing us chaps to wear outfits that express the feeling of having a spring in our step. On this occasion, it seemed fitting to celebrate the change in the seasons with a gingham shirt, a lightweight cardigan and chinos, with desert boots to finish off the outfit. A gingham shirt is one of those wardrobe essentials that I think works for men of all ages - it's eternally stylish. Let's be honest, for a guy a shirt and trou ..read more

Styling Casual Brown Chinos, Over 40 Menswear

After the craziness of the weekend that was the UK Blog Awards (at which the wife Not Dressed As Lamb won in the Fashion & Beauty category!), I was happy to swap my smart suit for some casual brown chinos. Huge congratulations to Catherine - third time lucky as they say! This is a simple casual look that saw me through the weekend. A merino wool v-neck jumper with t-shirt, the chinos and a pair of canvas boots was just what the doctor ordered. I was looking through my wardrobe for something to wear out and it was still chilly enough to leave the summer clothes for now. So many times ov ..read more

Layering With a Hoodie to Achieve a Smart Casual Look

The great thing about layering is its practicality: Depending on the season, the colder it is, the more layers you can generally wear. Each one has a function and isn't just there for show, you can easily wear a hoodie (like I have here) under a jacket and over a shirt and tie and still pull off a stylish look. When it's cold like it has been (the cold weather just won't quit), I'd go so far as to wear gloves and a scarf and possibly a hat as well (I seem to be singing "Macho, macho man" in my head now). Of course you know what happens as soon as you step inside, yep all the layers co ..read more

A Smart Stylish Alternative to a Suit and Tie, Over 40 Menswear

As you can probably see from the photos it was extremely windy and I had a bad hair day! Always one to persevere, it was definitely time to wear a striped jumper with this nice blue jacket, a pair of grey trousers and brown brogues [similar] to finish off the outfit. I do find brogues the most comfortable shoes to wear anytime (and stylish of course). I only occasionally put on a striped jumper or patterned top of any sort, I'm just never that taken on the choices that I find but I think this one works well and compliments the jacket. I'd probably say that this look is the epitome of ..read more

How to Style a Vintage Harris Tweed Jacket for the Transitional Season

A Harris Tweed jacket and roll neck can really look good when winter is coming to an end but it's still too cold to get your summer clothes out. This jacket is very easy to style (and looks great accompanied by denim and brogues) and certainly keeps you comfortable and warm. I think the grey-on-grey works well in this outfit. I don't know if any of you recognise what type of gloves I'm wearing, but amazingly they're Austrian police gloves. I found them while looking for standard black gloves on eBay - it's funny where your search can take you and what you end up finding. My jacket was one ..read more

Can Men in Their 40s Wear a Baseball Cap Without Looking Scruffy?

This is definitely a dress-down look for me, more "let's go shopping" or "go to the cinema" than planning for a nice meal out in the evening. The jeans and sweatshirt are mainstay items that require no fanfare, the desert boots, jacket and scarf add style. Then we come to the matter of the baseball cap. I have no issues wearing one, but is it something (like sneakers) that just look scruffy on a forty plus guy? Are baseball caps okay for men in their 40s?My thoughts on this: I'm not sure. It's not like I'm trying to hide my face, I've just always worn baseball caps, but do they "suit" me ..read more

Styling a Harrington Jacket Steve McQueen Style

This outfit is certainly a simple ensemble - a white t-shirt topped with a Harrington jacket, grey chinos and classic Converse All Stars, and it didn't require much in the way of getting-ready time which is a good thing. A Harrington jacket and white t-shirt are very 'Steve McQueen' and the Converse are just as stylish today as they have ever been... a timeless classic it's fair to say. I don't think this outfit is necessarily lacking in colour, all the items I'm wearing work well together. If I introduced a pattern or vibrant colour into the outfit, I think it would spoil the aesthe ..read more

A Stylish Way For Over 40 Men to Wear a Cardigan

I've always been a fan of mixing formal wear with a casual look. A shirt and tie can be worn with a pair of chinos and desert boots to give a more relaxed look to an outfit, and with this you could wear a patterned or cable knit cardigan (like mine). Let's face it, cardigans get a 'bad rap' and always have, but I find that they are a good utility piece and can be used as a replacement for jackets or waistcoats as seen here. Chinos are a great trouser type on men, they are versatile and lightweight and (like denim) can be worn in many different styles depending on what the wearer is aiming ..read more

Okay... It's fair to say I've been on an extended break from my blog, but I'm glad to announce I'm back and it's full steam ahead! In truth, my absence has been down to a lack of time to really get involved in posting regularly. But that's all in the past now, and I hope that whatever you see here is of interest to men in their 40s (and over) who are looking for some style inspiration. In fact, not just middle-aged men like myself, but anyone who is looking for lots of everyday looks that can be pulled off by the Average Joe. Going forward, I hope to be posting regularly on a Monday m ..read more
