Leon Graafland in the tulip fields, 20 miles outside Gouda.
I grew up in the Netherlands; just outside Gouda in a small old village surrounded by dairy farms, rivers and dikes. Gouda is the cheese capital of the country with a charming Thursday and Saturday cheese market.
My father was born on a dairy farm that was sold before my time. I spent the summers playing and working on my friends’ farms – feeding cows, cleaning, harvesting hay. My uncle was a cheese monger and cheese was always there.
After high school, my career took some interesting twists; I left for the city to study, I w ..read more

Colleagues Ritz Guggiana (RG Consultants) and David Viviani (www.vivianimarketing.com)
Ten years ago, I went to the Summer Fancy Foods Show in New York City. It was an incredible experience. I tried all kinds of new foods, including my first Greek style yogurt. It is the largest specialty food show in North America. I went because, at the time, we (cheesemaking.com) were thinking about a new cheese kit and I wanted to get ideas for packaging.
The Specialty Food Association produces 2 Fancy Foods Shows every year- summer in NYC and winter in Las Vegas. (The winte ..read more

Rita with her old Springer, Farley (14 1/2) and her pup, Abby (4 months) on a camping trip to Quadra Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island last June.
I live in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

David Viviani at a reception for President Sergio Mattarella of Italy, at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. He was honored to shake the hand of the President.
As always, it’s an honor to interview a celebrity in the world of cheese – especially when the celebrity is as kind and gracious as David Viviani. He and his family played a part in elevating the state of California to second place in cheese production, behind only Wisconsin.
During the course of this interview, one of the qualities we found most endearing about David was his respect for the past and for his remarkable family ..read more

Kylie with Rémy, her 18 month old Schipperke.
Kylie is just starting her cheesemaking adventure, thanks to the gift of a workshop she attended last summer. Her story reminds us that workshops make the best gifts for aspiring cheesemakers. (As a bonus, after the workshop, the giver becomes the happy recipient of homemade cheese!)
Kylie’s Story
I live with my family in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia – my husband Andrew, our 2 teenagers, Felicity (18) and Fergus (14), as well as our Schipperke, Rémy (my fellow cheese fiend) and our Burmese cat, Charlotte.
Here we all are in far Nor ..read more
