Why Jesus Had to Die
Key Life

I struggled to put on some clothing and made my way to the house. When I got there, the smoke was heavy, the smell was horrible and the cries were even worse. Every member of the family had escaped the burning house except the father. I will never forget standing before that burning house, holding the hand of the teenage daughter. I will never forget the teenager watching as they carried her father’s body out of the house, draped over by a sheet so that the family wouldn’t have to look at the stark reality of death. I will never forget her looking into my eyes and asking, “Pastor, why? Why di ..read more

Communism to Theism

Life is good. Michigan professors love my Marxist analyses. I plan to stay at U of M and get a PhD. The university library subscribes to Pravda, the Moscow newspaper. My Russian knowledge is good enough for me to read about “unyielding war against religious patterns of thought.” I’m an addict who favors “suppressing, once and for all, of those relics from the past,” as Pravda puts it. On Halloween, students in Nixon masks stalk the Diag, the walkway cutting across the central section of the University of Michigan campus. The next day, November 1, 1973, begins as normal with my reading of Prav ..read more

Marriage: The Happy, Holy, Beautiful Mess

Well, it’s true and it’s a glorious thing. The growing in holiness part doesn’t always seem blissful. But it means that God isn’t finished with you yet, either. The purpose and hope in marriage isn’t defined by you or your spouse, but by God. THE BRIDE & GROOM’S SINISTER MINISTER Let’s talk about weddings. I’m no veteran, but of the seven or so years I used to be a volunteer, I had the privilege of officiating a handful of weddings. It’s fun to be part of a couple’s huge life event. Two lives come together in the sight of God, family, and friends; it’s a pretty big deal. I love the excite ..read more

The Dirty Words of Counseling
Key Life

Whether you dispense financial advice at the water cooler, or talk a friend through a crisis, we are all counseling, all the time. The problem is, we’re often not good counselors. Usually our counsel is more like advice, and advice isn’t always helpful. COUNSELING: THE GREASED PIG RODEO Good counseling requires simultaneously juggling patience, attentiveness, and care. Of course, with a little practice, anyone with basic motor skills can learn to juggle, but helping hurting, confused, or wayward people often feels less like juggling, and more like a greased pig rodeo. The reason for this is t ..read more

What is God Like?

Look to Jesus Biblical Christians should find out about God from Jesus. Christ is the standard for everything a Christian should think about God. If something we think about God violates what we know of Jesus, what he taught, and how he acted, then that thought lies. If someone gives us the impression that God’s nature differs from what Jesus said and demonstrated it to be, then don’t buy a used car from that person—and don’t listen to anything he or she says about anything else. If someone errs on this important issue, probably he or she will go badly wrong about a whole lot more. What I’m a ..read more

They’ve deconstructed and found they have nothing left. I do understand where they are coming from. I’ve seen toxic religion so up close and personal it hurts. As I mentioned, I get this a lot from people who know how I grew up, in a pastor’s home filled with terrifying religious hypocrisy: “How in the world did you wind up a Jesus follower?” It’s a fine question. I’ve seen such deep ugliness, and not just as a kid. I’ve seen how professional Christians have transformed so much of “church” into an industry. I’ve seen people drag Jesus into their political power plays, on the Left and Right. W ..read more

We are Getting Better (Believe it or Not)
Key Life

I do. Frankly, since I’ve been doing this Christian thing for a very long time, I thought I would be a spiritual giant by now. That never happened, but I’ve been thinking about getting better. I really think I’m better and, in some ways, a lot better. And I honestly didn’t know. God had to show me. Do you know why he had to show me?  Because while it’s true that the nature of self-righteousness is that self-righteous people aren’t aware of their self-righteousness, it is also true that righteous people aren’t often aware of their righteousness. That’s true of you as well. You’re probably ..read more

As I entered the stairwell, I noticed someone under the stairs, almost like he was hiding. I remember thinking that that was strange. Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the person jump out of the shadows and swing what looked like a stick. I felt something, not a pain, more like intense pressure on the back of my head. I tried to turn in the direction of the fellow who had hit me, but as I did, my vision blurred, and then, nothing. The next thing I was aware of was being in a bed with silver rails on either side. My head hurt, and I had to squint because of a bright fluorescent lig ..read more

In the midst of the chaotic dance between my Air Force service and part-time seminary study during my late twenties, a seemingly unremarkable book fell into my hands as a gift from my pastor. In the midst of the chaotic dance between my Air Force service and part-time seminary study during my late twenties, a seemingly unremarkable book fell into my hands as a gift from my pastor. It was titled “We Would See Jesus” by Roy Hession (CLC, 1953), and in the vast sea of theology I was navigating at the time, it felt like a tiny drop. Little did I know that within those pages, a revelation awaited ..read more
