December 18 will be a great day for everyone in the U.S. who drives on the interstates, highways and even local roads. It’s the day the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate goes into effect. On that day, the roads will be safer, finally. Yet, the trucking industry and its lobby groups strongly oppose the ELD mandate. They’ve invested a whole lot of money and time fighting it. It tells us, perhaps not surprisingly, that trucking industry leaders are more focused on worshipping the almighty dollar than ensuring the safety and well-being of your family, friends and even the truck drivers they ..read more

Work Smart. Hire Women.
LTL Freight Center

More than 50% of my total staff has always been women. I haven’t done this for some silly social justice quota thinking. I hire women because it’s just good business sense. In my experience, women are smarter and more detailed oriented. They work harder and give greater effort than a lot of the men I’ve worked with. They also care more and have proven more dependable time after time. I’m in business to be successful. Success demands a good, reliable team staffed by the best candidates. In my business, the best candidates time and again are women. I’m Not Against Guys, But I Want Leaders As a b ..read more

Why the Unishippers Worldwide Express Merger Will Cost You
LTL Freight Center
by Dean McNeely

As originally published on LinkedIn… Another merger and more bad news for shipping customers. In a previous post I wrote about five ways mergers cost businesses. In it I cited mergers in banks and airlines, but seriously, regardless of the industry, has any merger benefited customers more than shareholders? The recent Unishippers and Worldwide Express merger will be no different. The spin will declare it will help lower rates and improve service. Really? That spin may work to keep the sales folk around long enough to bridge the transition. But eventually the reality will settle in. The experi ..read more

When it Comes to Shipping, LTL Rates Come Second
LTL Freight Center
by Dean McNeely

as originally published on LinkedIn… LTL rates get a lot of attention. Understandably, customers who need to move freight want the lowest LTL rates they can find. When marketing, freight companies talk about low rates. But a rates-first approach guarantees higher costs. To make the most of an LTL rate, a shipper needs to put first things first. What comes first? Customer service. A company that needs to ship, or even a logistics company looking for a partner, should evaluate the customer service approach of a potential vendor first. Great customer service guarantees more savings that a low rat ..read more

Should I Outsource My Houston Trucking Needs to a Logistics Broker?

Should I Outsource My Houston Trucking Needs to a Logistics Broker? As Hamlet said, “To outsource, or not to outsource / That is the question.” Well, okay maybe Hamlet didn’t say that, but he would have been just as right if he did. In my more than twenty years shipping product internationally and as a freight broker working with Houston trucking, that question has been considered more than once. As a freight broker in Houston, I recommend my clients re-evaluate that question every year. Shipping needs change and so does the transportation industry. As we enter a new year, let’s look at why yo ..read more

3 Pokemon GO Revelations That Can Help Company’s Cut Costs (Shipping Too!)

The Pokemon GO craze has revealed a critical fact about our world.  We need to put technology where it belongs and get back to the business of living.  While that may seem like an individual choice, the fact is businesses who apply this same principle stand to cut their costs and increase revenues. I see it every day.  You see, Pokemon GO has revealed how addictive technology can be, how it can be misapplied and lead otherwise sane people to ignore obvious safety.  These same behaviors also occur in business environments – just in more subtle ways.  While they may not ..read more
