Oh man this wonderful world of making music is constantly improving! Just the other day in class with my High School students I overheard the kids talking about the sounds coming out of their music notation app we were working in. The student mentioned “yeah, it’s supposed to sound like a saxophone but it’s not very realistic.” My response was, “well, ya know…. you should have heard what this all sounded like back in MY day!” To which the student quickly replied, “Like chisels hitting rocks?” But seriously all fun aside… I couldn’t have been happier later that day when I got home and started l ..read more

One of the things that REALLY drives me bonkers is when people use spreadsheets for what they should be using a DataBase for! At the same time I understand the problem! Greater consumer level databases are hard to come by! HISTORY LESSON Back in the day before iWork – iWork started it’s life on January 11, 2005 at MacWorld Expo – (remember those?) Before iWork we had ClarisWorks – which started in 1988 and has kind of been revitalized when FileMaker became Claris Before ClarisWorks we had AppleWorks – which started in 1984 Back in THOSE days a proper database was a part of the suite of apps! Well it is currently June 14, 2023 and WWDC 2023 has now come and gone. What did we get as far as hardware? 1)A new MacBook Air with a 15″ screen and it has an M2 chip in it! 2)Mac mini and Mac Studio with M2 chip in them! I am writing this post currently on my 2016 MacBook Pro 15″ with 2.7 GHz Quad Core i7 processor in it. I loved my TouchBar but I will say that since I cracked my laptop screen a year and a half ago I have been running the MacBook in clamshell mode so I have not used it. So my question is simple…. Could I actually buy a MacBook Air now and have it run everything my MacBook P ..read more

Oh dear me… it seems to have been quite a little while since I have posted! Now that summer is here maybe we can find some time to write a bit more. There have been a few notable items this past month – Apple’s WWDC has come and passed, and NAMM has been held successfully – Congrats John on making it through your first of what I hope will be many NAMM shows! Working with Notation and Audio in StaffPad
iPad and Technology in Music Education

Every now and then there are innovations that come along and simply change the way that our work gets done! The process of having an audio file that a musician would like to figure out a written musical arrangement of is nothing new. The process with which we get that done has changed though over the years. This post is NOT about a new process, new app, new “thing”. But instead it is about using technology in ways that have changed how I have worked in 2022. Back in the day I would have my cassette player and a pad of paper/pencil on top of my piano. I would hit play, and then mess around on ..read more

So this resonates SO much as a teacher of students who get told way too often that they can’t do something. Or they get told “it’s hard…” or worse, they get told “it’s too hard!” What are you telling your students? What are you telling YOURSELF? I Didn’t Know We Couldn’t Do It, So We Did It ..read more
