The culmination to my recent Australia trip was attending and speaking at the Project and Program Management Symposium (PGCS) in Canberra. The keynote presentation by Chris Deeble highlighted the importance of managing risk to deliver on project and program promises. The 3-day PGCS event started with an excellent keynote by Chris Deeble. The Deputy Secretary of the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group gave an overview of the CASG 2.0 “time for a change” initiative. His “delivering on our promises” presentation included the focus on speed to capability. Of particular interest ..read more

We were delighted last month to bring back the Risk Decisions Community Event, a networking day designed to bring together professionals to share experiences and new ideas around risk.   The event has always been the highlight of our social calendar so it has been a travesty to have to set it aside for the past few years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and instead meet with our customers virtually. Whilst there are plenty of perks to not having to travel great distances to meet, nothing can beat the experience of bringing everyone together in one room to catch up and bounce ideas off one ..read more

Bidding to win – should you risk it?
Risk Decisions

9 out of 10 projects come in over budget and late. Every project encounters risk. If and when incidents occur, they can significantly impact time, budget, and deliverability meaning that if risks are not carefully considered at the planning stages, the project will inevitably fail to meet its objectives. So, what’s the answer? Don’t take any risks at all? There wouldn’t many projects running if they chose this option. We simply need to plan for potential risks from the get-go. We recently ran a series of webinars exploring the process, risks, and techniques of effective bid risk management ..read more

Indo Pacific: My return to live events – Megan Holgate, Business Development Accounts Manager, APAC
Risk Decisions

Along with the rest of the world, I am celebrating what has been a slow but welcome return to in person events this year.  Having joined Risk Decisions back in February 2020, I’ve missed out on the opportunity to connect with clients and colleagues in person, until now. My role as Business Development Accounts Manager in the APAC region sees me speaking to our customers daily and so far I have relied on doing so virtually, leaving me eager to re-join the real world.  This month I was able to do exactly that with the restoration of many live events. This includes the Indo Pacific ..read more

Change Your Approach. Win The Bidding Game.
Risk Decisions
by Fiona Racher

The pressure to reduce construction project costs is intense, and this creates a very challenging bidding environment. Commit to an ambitious schedule and you could face a costly overrun, bid too high and you could lose business altogether. The trend for bidding low is eroding profit margins to the point where companies are going into administration. In a market where competition for new business is intense, deciding to no-bid takes courage, and requires sound justification. So what’s the solution for winning bids? In this article, we explain how understanding and analysing risk and unce ..read more

Risk Software over Spreadsheets
Risk Decisions

Why not to use spreadsheets to manage risk.  I can write pages to support the question ‘Why using spreadsheets is not the most efficient method to manage risk,’ but I feel the feedback from the Australian National Audit Office’s (ANAO) review into Australian Defence Force’s ongoing use of spreadsheets – speaks volumes in one sentence: ‘The ANAO previously observed that Defence’s use of spreadsheets as a primary form of record of risk management is a high-risk approach. Spreadsheets lack formalised change/version control and reporting, thereby increasing the risk of error. This can make s ..read more

The Cloud. Not as bad as we expected?
Risk Decisions
by Mike Morgan

In the past decade, we have seen the rise in both the quantity and magnitude of data centres around the world. This can of course be attributed to the overwhelming success of ‘The Cloud’. Though even with its success, there has been a constant growth in opposition of people who see the threat of increased energy consumption and pollution. Remarkably, as time has passed, these centres have become incredibly energy efficient. A new study found that that even though cloud computing has leaped 600% from 2010 to 2018, energy consumption has only risen by 6%. We can a ..read more
