It’s a dilemma no business owner should have to face: whether to reopen after a mass shooting. The answer didn’t come easily to Justin and Samantha Juray. But when they did decide to reopen their Maine bowling alley, they didn’t hold back. When patrons return Friday, six months after the gunman opened fire, they will see inspiring pictures at the end of each lane, bright paint on the walls, and new floors. The Karen Read murder trial is leaving the courtroom on Friday after a week of intense testimony. Jurors will wrap up this week by visiting the scene of the crime where Read’s boyfriend, Boston police Officer John O’Keefe, was found dead. The jury trip will include a stop at the Fairview Road home in Canton, Massachusetts, where O’Keefe was found dead as well as the Waterfall Bar and Grill — the last place he was seen alive. While prosecutors have been keeping their cards close to their chest, the defense says this could be a positive for them improving their case and they’re happy the judge a ..read more

Workweek ends partly cloudy, cooler before the next warm up
NECN

The downpours (and thunder) from last evening delivered a crushing blow to our warm temperatures. We’re left with the cloudy aftermath Friday morning and face an uphill climb to get the sun back. Onshore breezes aren’t helping either. They’ll attempt to feed the cloud deck and keep the overcast intact. Despite that, I’m still seeing some breaks this afternoon as little pockets of dry air move in from northern New England. We’re also married to these coolish temperatures through the weekend. While not March-like, we’ll struggle to make 60 in spots near the coast. Away from the coast, by just a ..read more

The prosecution’s star witness has yet to take the stand in Donald Trump’s hush money trial. But jurors are already hearing Michael Cohen’s words as prosecutors work to directly tie Trump to payments to silence women with damaging claims about him before the 2016 election. The second week of testimony in the case will wrap up Friday after jurors heard a potentially crucial piece of evidence: a recording of Trump and Cohen, then his attorney, discussing a plan to pay off an ex-Playboy model who claimed to have an affair with Trump. The former president denies the affair. Prosecutors have spent ..read more

NECN
by Kelly Zegers

Only 13 thoroughbreds have won the coveted Triple Crown of horse racing in the 100-plus years since Sir Barton became the first to win all three big races — the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes — in the same year. American Pharoah’s sweep in 2015 ended a 25-year Triple Crown lull. Three years later, Justify’s sweep made him the 13th horse ever to win the Triple Crown. But which of the 13 champions had the fastest time overall? That would be horse racing legend Secretariat, who earned the three-race title in 1973 and holds the fastest combined time for each of the th ..read more

An aviation worker — who went public with safety concerns and alleged retaliation by his employer — has died following a brief illness, weeks after another Boeing whistleblower’s death, attorneys who represented both men said Thursday. Joshua Dean, 45, of Wichita, Kansas, died Tuesday after he received multiple diagnoses that included the flu, pneumonia and MRSA, prompting his family to seek an autopsy, attorney Robert Turkewitz said. “He was a healthy individual who ate well and exercised,” Turkewitz told NBC News. “So it just seems odd that he went so fast.” Dea ..read more

Four Americans now face potential 12-year sentences for charges of ammunition possession after allegedly bringing bullets in their luggage while vacationing on the Islands of Turks and Caicos. NBC10 Boston was the first to break the story, which is now making international headlines. Teresa Pfau, the mother of Michael Grim, spoke with NBC10 Boston and criticized how U.S. Embassy officials handled Grim’s case and communications with her. “I would say we received minimal support from the U.S. Embassy” in the Bahamas, Pfau said.
