It’s over ten years since the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) Geomatics Committee released the seabed survey data model (SSDM), which helped standardise the management of seabed survey data – of enormous value to offshore operators to help plan and mitigate risks associated with drilling, pipeline and other production and decommissioning operations through the identification of geo-hazard, debris, environmental, debris and seafloor features. As the energy transition continues, the offshore model becomes relevant to other sectors, such as wind farm installation and CCS ..read more

The 2023 Esri User Conference (UC) gets underway on July 10th and, as is traditional, Esri has now published its Q&A ahead of the conference. Here are some highlights that I think might be of interest for folk working in the Energy and Natural Resources sectors. Creating the World You Want to See The theme of this year’s UC is GIS – Creating the World You Want to See. This, says Esri, reflects the vision that GIS “can create a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world.” The Q&A notes that “of all the environmental challenges facing our world, climate change is perhaps the bigg ..read more

In December 2022 the state of California held Pacific Wind, its first offshore wind leasing round. Leases were available both offshore Eureka in northern California and offshore Morro Bay in central California.     With additional challenges around implementing floating turbines (due to the water depths) and the access to a market, several questions arose that developers may want to answer:   How many turbines can be placed within the lease areas on offer?   How much revenue could be generated?   How many households could be supplied with electricity ..read more

Have you ever experienced odd behavior in your maps? Layers that should be visible not displaying correctly at certain zoom levels? Other layers appearing when they shouldn’t be visible?   Here we see a map of the Shetland areas where the Basemap and Field layers are switched off in the Table of Contents, but still appear on the map.      Zooming out one level, the layers appear as expected – i.e. no Basemap or Fields on the map.      This may be a result of the ArcGIS Pro Feature Cache.   Here’s how Esri describes the cache:  ArcGIS Pro ..read more

The North Sea Transition Authority are the UK’s oil, gas and carbon storage regulator, tasked with driving the energy transition in the North Sea. Embedding digitalisation and making data open and available is one initiative to drive this. As part of this, the Energy Act 2016 requires each UKCS operator to appoint a named Information and Samples Coordinator (ISC), who is responsible for reporting petroleum-related information to NSTA. Section 34 of this act requires pipeline and infrastructure data to be reported. Essentially, this is ‘the kit’ which sits on the seabed, undersea and at surface ..read more
