The Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) is hiring! About the Nonhuman Rights Project The Nonhuman Rights Project is the only civil rights organization in the United States dedicated solely tosecuring rights for nonhuman animals. Our groundbreaking work challenges an archaic, unjust legal status quo that views and treats all nonhuman animals as “things” with no rights. We work to achieve our message in three ways: (1) Litigation (changing the legal status quo and catalyzing aglobal conversation about how nonhuman animals are viewed and treated under the law); (2) Legislation and Advocacy (building g ..read more

Our Unexpected Visit to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Mickey Suzuki
1y ago
A few weekends ago, we shared the news over social media that the Fresno Chaffee Zoo had transferred our client Vusmusi to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, apparently because they weren’t successful in their efforts to use him for breeding with Nolwazi and her daughter Amahle. This is a behind-the-scenes look at what went on that weekend.  Late in the afternoon on Friday, November 11th, the first day of the 2022 PAWS International Captive Wildlife Conference in Sacramento, Courtney Fern, the NhRP’s Director of Government Relations and Campaigns, who was sitting next to me, leaned in and whi ..read more

What Sanctuary For Elephants Looks Like
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Mickey Suzuki
1y ago
As part of our work to secure the right to liberty for our unlawfully imprisoned clients, the NhRP demands their release to sanctuary. This is because, as with many captive nonhuman animals, being released back into the natural habitats they were stolen from (or their mothers were stolen from) is not feasible. Years in captivity leaves animals physically and mentally traumatized, too accustomed to human contact and ill-equipped with the skills needed to survive in the wild. Thankfully, there are places of refuge for our clients to go–places where their right to liberty will be respected. One s ..read more

Argentine Court Recognizes Dogs As Rightsholders
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Jake Davis
1y ago
We at the NhRP welcome more good news from Buenos Aires as the same Argentine court that recognized a cougar named Lola Limon as a subject of rights has now recognized fifty-five dachshunds (and their later-born puppies) as the subjects of rights (thank you Silvina Pezzetta for sharing this English translation of the decision). On June 14, 2022, Argentine authorities raided the home of Mrs. Ana Cingolani who was accused of operating an illegal puppy mill. The prosecutor made two requests to the court. First, that all fifty-five seized dachshunds should be declared subjects of rights becau ..read more

Urge Wildlife Conservation Society Interim President and CEO to #FreeHappy
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Lauren Choplin
1y ago
We’ve learned the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the Bronx Zoo where our client Happy is held alone in captivity, will have an Interim President and CEO starting Oct. 8th. You can help #FreeHappy and #FreePatty (the other elephant held alone in captivity in the Bronx Zoo) by using this form to send a message to Robert Menzi, urging him to send them to sanctuaries and follow through on the Bronx Zoo’s 2006 pledge to close the captive elephant program for good following the deaths of one or more elephants (which happened in 2018 when Maxine was euthanized). Meanwhile, the legal fig ..read more

The Story of the Longest-Held Captive Orca
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Christine Caruso
1y ago
In 2013 I watched the movie Blackfish, and it had a profound impact on me. It brought back my childhood memories of going to SeaWorld and having feelings of sadness watching the orcas and dolphins in shows because they weren’t free in the ocean. I remember being told by adults that these animals were happy because they were cared for and fed and were lucky to be there. Blackfish hit a nerve, and I wanted to learn more about orcas in captivity, so I read articles and books and attended events and presentations that focused on captive and wild orcas. I learned about Corky and realized her story ..read more

The NhRP congratulates our cruelty-free corporate partner Hourglass Cosmetics for the launch of their Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked palettes. The three palettes feature artwork by illustrator Katie Scott, one of which depicts our elephant client Happy. These limited-edition palettes are part of their Unlocked collection (the name was inspired by documentary film Unlocking the Cage) and 5% of the profits go towards supporting the work we do to secure fundamental rights for nonhuman animals. Watch Hourglass founder and CEO Carisa Janes’ message of support for Happy here. The cruelty-free luxury ..read more

Fresno Superior Court to Rule on Petition to #FreeTheFresnoElephants
Nonhuman Rights Project

Today in Nolwazi, Amahle, and Vusmusi’s habeas corpus case, NhRP Staff Attorney Jake Davis argued before Fresno Superior Court Judge Mark Cullers in a hearing on a motion we filed asking the Court to transfer the elephants’ case back to the San Francisco Superior Court, where we’d originally filed their habeas corpus petition (under California law we have the right to file a habeas corpus petition in any county. Before beginning any new litigation, we carefully consider all aspects of it, including where to file to best serve our clients’ interests). The San Francisco Superior Court had p ..read more

#FreeTheFresnoElephants Social Media Billboard Campaign
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Courtney Fern
1y ago
A key part of our fight for our clients’ freedom is engaging and working with the community where they’re held captive. To this end, we do all we can to share our clients’ stories and discuss how another, more just life is possible for them in sanctuaries where they can live with freedom, peace, and dignity. In our experience, once people learn about who elephants are and what they need, they join us in wanting to bring an end to their suffering, especially when it’s happening where they live. That’s why, in late July, we put up five billboards across Fresno, California, where Amahle, Nolwazi ..read more

Venue for Fresno Case to be Determined Soon
Nonhuman Rights Project
by Jake Davis
1y ago
On Wednesday, the NhRP filed a “Reply in Support of Motion for an Order Returning Matter to San Francisco County Superior Court” (or, “Reply” for short) in our first California nonhuman rights case, which seeks to #FreeTheFresnoElephants to a sanctuary. As the Reply’s full caption notes, the NhRP continues to petition the Fresno Superior Court to return this case to the San Francisco Superior Court. The NhRP makes this argument on the grounds that the reason given by the San Francisco Superior Court for transferring this case to Fresno was improper. California law makes clear that absent a spe ..read more
