Fired a general contractor and now he wants to put a lien on my house.

I live in California. We hired a licensed contractor to redo floors in our entire house to luxury vinyl plank and tile in the bathrooms. We never signed a contract with him but his proposed contract said the job should take 5-6 days. 2 weeks went by and only 1/3 of the vinyl flooring is installed. The tile installation is faulty and dangerous to walk on as there are sharp edges sticking out and uneven. I decided to fire him and hire someone else to complete the job mid-project. Now he is up-charging us for work that he has completed (removing existing tile in living area, carpet removal, etc ..read more

Peach-Tinted Mirrored Wall in Our New House: Keep or Replace?

Hello r/HomeImprovement! We've just bought a house that features a full wall of peach-tinted smoked mirrors in the dining area. On one hand, I appreciate the depth and outdoor reflection it provides. On the other, both my partner and I aren't thrilled about its look. We're torn: should we keep it for its aesthetic and functional qualities, or is it a no-go and if so, what should we replace it with? Open to your opinions and suggestions. Thanks! submitted by /u/arrache2 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Massively delayed project, contractor now requesting final payment

We hired a reputable, local general contractor to renovate a large portion of our home in March 2021. We had 3 contractors bid on the project (all of whom were recommended by our architect), and as part of the bid, each produced a timeline for completion of our project. Each contractor (including the one we hired) estimated a 4-5 month completion timeline. The person we hired proved to be disastrous at managing the project and actually getting things done in a timely fashion, although the quality of the work done was good. While I don't know for sure what happened, my sense is that he simply ..read more

Converting an office into a bedroom and need to replace the window so it meets egress requirements for the state (room is going to be for foster kids so must be to code). The current window is a double hung (this exact one) >> https://www.homedepot.com/p/American-Craftsman-29-75-in-x-40-75-in-70-Series-Low-E-Argon-Glass-Double-Hung-White-Vinyl-Fin-with-J-Window-with-Grids-Screen-Incl-70-DH-FIN/203157334 Is it possible to put in a replacement casement without pulling out the entire window frame down to the rough opening? A number of window manufacturer websites say it is possible because ..read more

Mounting projector.. please help

Hi there, So basically, we need to mount a 20lb projector to our wall above our bed, and I'm terrified of not mounting it properly. The mount has four holes for screws, but they are wide enough apart to not all hit the stud. The projector mount makes the projector hang out about 12in, which I imagine increases the weight or torque placed on the screws. I know we can secure it to a stud on one side, but the mount is too wide to hit studs on all sides. We have plaster walls, not dry wall. My solution was to get metal drywall anchors for the right side (plaster wall). And then I'm completely stu ..read more

Garage makeover estimate.

We’re first time homeowners and wanted to furnish our unfinished garage. I’ve reached out to at least 3 handymen and received the first quote of $4500 (labor only) which includes to finish (dry wall) garage ceiling, walls (which includes removing existing old ply woods), paint, add lights to ceiling, add electrical outlets, replace existing galvanized water supply pipe to copper ones. I was wondering if $4500 labor cost is just about right or it’s on the higher side. We’re still waiting for a couple of more quotes to compare. We live in the (east) Bay Area if that helps. Highly appreciate for ..read more

I hate this skylight. Any advice?

We have a nice covered patio in our backyard, but it has this large skylight that takes away from the shade it provides. On really warm days it’s a pain to have the sun still beating down on you! It also leaks slightly when it rains heavily. I don’t have the skills (I don’t think) to do this myself. Would it be an easy job or recommended to have it removed, covered, and shingled ? What would you do? Thanks for the help! https://imgur.com/a/Q3t5QiQ submitted by /u/porpoising_lewis [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’d like to replace this (pics attached) mortise keyed lock set with just a traditional handle. What’s the best (and easiest!) way to do this?

https://imgur.com/a/qpF8nAU This has been giving me tons of problems. I want to replace it with a regular lock set. The deadbolt above works fine. What’s the best way to remove this and convert it to fit a regular handle set? I’m pretty handy but don’t have a lot of experience with locks and handles, is this something easy enough to do myself or do I need to hire someone? Thanks in advance for any tips or advice! submitted by /u/Mmmelanie [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
