By Will Andrews – Training Director May 31, 2019 marks the 117th anniversary of the end of the Boer War. The Boers were descendants of the original Dutch settlers in southern Africa. The roots of the conflict stretch back to Great Britain taking control of the Dutch Cape as a result of the Napoleonic war. As everywhere else they went, the British immediately made themselves unpopular and unwelcome. The Boers, bent on independence, resisted British rule. These general tensions grew until the 1890’s, when minor fighting broke out. By 1899, a full-fledged war was underway! While history records t ..read more

By Will Andrews, Training Director There is a sole suspect in the horrible shooting spree that left 11 dead and more than a half dozen wounded in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA on October 27, 2018. He faces 63 federal charges, and a separate 36 charges in Pennsylvania State Court. Many of these charges are capital offenses. That is to say, he has been charged with breaking a total of 99 laws. You are responsible for your own safety from criminals ..read more

By Will Andrews, Training Director Anyone who has trained with me will tell you that I’m a stickler for grip technique. A strong grip technique locks the pistol in place and allows consistent accuracy. It reduces felt recoil, making shooting more comfortable and hits at speed possible. A strong, consistent grip is the basic foundation of performance while shooting a handgun. And in this entry I’d like to discuss the other reasons I’m a stickler for grip technique. Once the dominant hand is on the pistol, a “master grip” is attained, and maintained. The dominant hand locks onto the pistol, and ..read more

By Will Andrews – Training Director For the first time in a long while, I’m excited about a new handgun on the market. At the risk of being the industry curmudgeon, not much in firearms has changed significantly since 1935. Materials have changed. Production techniques have changed. And those changes have had limited impacts on performance. These changes have lowered production costs, and in many cases lighten the guns themselves. But once in a while, something comes along that I feel truly fills an empty niche in the market place. Since the 1980’s, ammo capacity has been the driving force in ..read more

Red Flag Laws

By Will Andrews, Training Director at Wilshire Gun I try to be apolitical. Obviously, I have political preferences and opinions but I just try to keep them to myself. But sometimes something comes along that forces me to show my hand. Vermont has passed a “red flag law,” that allows the state to “temporarily” confiscate firearms from those deemed as a threat to public safety. At face value, this might seem to be a good thing to keep us all safe. However, this type of law allowing for the confiscation of personal property from a citizen without due process of law is not a good thing at all. It ..read more

by Will Andrews, Training Director This morning’s news brings us the story of 3 shot at a local convenience store, and a car stolen. It seems the perpetrator approached a driver at a gas pump and demanded car keys. When the driver refused, the perpetrator shot him. He then walked into the store itself, again demanding car keys, and shot at the clerk, luckily missing him, and left the store. Outside, in the parking lot, he shot a third person, a lady who had just pulled into the lot, and then stole her car. The car, with the perpetrator still in it, was found less than 2 miles from where I sit ..read more

by Will Andrews, Training Director at Wilshire Gun Over the years, I have researched and studied thousands of shootings and use of force incidents. The only common thread among them is vagueness and confusion. None of them are black and white, clear cut affairs. Most of them have long ugly back stories of animosity between the parties, bad business dealings (often illegal business) and personal vendettas. I study these events in the attempt of learning something about violence, violent people, and the physicality of defense. Recently, there was a shooting in Texas that highlights all of these ..read more

Many of us have been in the woods and had that big trophy buck come walking out to the edge of a field, 250 yards away, stop and stare. “Buck Fever” begins to run wild. You line up for the perfect shot, break the trigger, and he runs away into the distance. Your shot hits the dirt just short of him. There is nothing more painful than missing! How could it have happened? You have used the same gun, the same ammunition, and the same scope for years? 250 yards is not that far, right? What could have happened? Enter the Sig Sauer BDX scope and rangefinder system. The system is designed to take all ..read more

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCOPE FOR YOUR HUNTING RIFLE

With hunting season right around the corner one thing we are often asked is, “What scope should I put on my hunting rifle”? This is a big decision for many hunters as there are so many different options, models and magnifications from which to choose. The general rule of thumb that I like to tell everyone when it comes to scopes is that you want 1x for every 100yds you plan on shooting. For the majority of hunters here in Oklahoma, most will be well suited with a 3-9x40mm scope. It provides the perfect range of magnification without breaking the bank and gives you a nice, clear scope. But if y ..read more
