Gun Culture 2.0

Any time the lottery goes over a few hundred million dollars, my wife throws a few bucks toward some tickets. When my mind wanders to the possibility of winning, my first thought is always: That would really disrupt our lives! I am fortunate in so many ways, including having a job I enjoy and earning enough from that job (and my second job as a tennis racket technician). I don’t have to worry about whether or not I win the lottery. On the other hand, I probably don’t think enough about money. I have personally subsidized my research and writing on American gun culture to the tune of tens of th ..read more

An Average Gun Guy’s Pistol Metrics
Gun Culture 2.0
by David Yamane

Averages are funny. I’ve observed before that the “average” American has approximately one testicle. Of course, this average conceals underlying diversity in the distribution of testicles in the population. At the start of Pistol Metrics One at Apache Solutions Firearms Training, instructor Tim Kelly asked us to introduce ourselves and say something about our expectations for the class. I described myself as an “average American gun owner.” Like testicles, this characterization conceals underlying diversity in my shooting practices and abilities. If “average” here means 50%, then my average is ..read more

Gun Culture 2.0

We just successfully completed a four-meeting discussion of Gun Country by Andrew McKevitt, culminating in a Q&A with the author in the final session. Things went so well that we are going to hold a second series of meetings on Jonathan Metzl’s recently published What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms (find links to purchase below). Reading and Discussion Schedule I have tried to break the book up into 3 logical parts to go along with our three meeting dates (6:00-7:00pm Eastern Time): Thursday, April 4: Read Introduction, Part 1 (“The Seventeenth C ..read more

Proving a Basic Books Editor Wrong One Purchase at a Time
Gun Culture 2.0

Today I am wrapping up a four-session Virtual Book Club reading of historian Andrew McKevitt’s Gun Country: Gun Capitalism, Culture & Control in Cold War America (Bookshop.org affiliate link). I will surely have more to say about this book in the months and years to come, but for now I wanted to highlight something I found on the very last page of the book’s text. And I mean The. Last. Page. After the Epilogue. In the Acknowledgements. Coming at the very end of the book, for many readers the acknowledgements are an afterthought. But as an author, they are one of my favorite parts of a book ..read more

I have taught my Sociology of Guns seminar at Wake Forest University once per year for nine consecutive years. I don’t have the actual number of students who have ever taken the course handy, but it is about 150. I currently have over 250 people signed up for a free public webinar version of the course I am offering this spring, which is incredible! Below are some bullet points about the course – which I am calling “Ten Essential Observations on Guns in America” – followed by an explanation of the course syllabus (which you can view online here). A “Light Over Heat” YouTube video that covers t ..read more

by David Yamane

I’m very pleased to say that the first three meetings of my inaugural Virtual Book Club on historian Andrew McKevitt’s Gun Country: Gun Capitalism, Culture & Control in Cold War America (Bookshop Affiliate Link) have been outstanding. I am definitely going to continue this club, so stay tuned for an announcement of the second book we’ll be reading. I’m also pleased to announce that the author himself, Andrew McKevitt, will be joining us for our fourth and final discussion of his book. He’s graciously agreed to spend an hour answering our questions. This final meeting will be on the Zo ..read more

Explaining “The Master Narrative” in Relation to My Own Work
Gun Culture 2.0
by David Yamane

Some misunderstandings around the series of posts I have begun on “The Master Narrative of Democracy-Destroying Right-Wing Gun Culture” make me realize I need to explain a bit more about how this dominant paradigm in the field of gun studies relates to my own work on gun culture. On thing I have always done well as a scholar is digesting and systematizing research in a particular field. Looking at Google Scholar, the four works I have published since 1994 that have the most citations by other scholars are all efforts to make sense of an area of research as opposed to being original research in ..read more
