Squats are one of the first movements that comes to mind when we think of exercising or lifting weights. It’s an extremely useful exercise that can help you with getting in and out of a chair, up and down stairs, or maintaining strength in the legs. The squat is also one of the most fundamental and practical body weight exercises available to us with no equipment required!  Here at Advance Physical Therapy we see many patients attempting to protect sensitive body parts as they squat, whether it’s the knees ..read more

Split Squats are basically lunges performed in place. The ‘split’ refers to a split stance, which means one foot in front of the other. If I could choose one lower body exercise to never lose the ability to do, it’d be a split squat. Probably the most common question or concern with this activity – where should I feel it? That’s easy, you should feel it in the leg that is forward. If you’re doing a really good job ..read more

What does it mean to be “hypermobile”?
Advance Physical Therapy

If you are hypermobile, you may be “double-jointed” or very flexible. So, you may be able to perform splits easily, put your feet behind your head, or flatten your hands to the floor without bending your knees? This means the ligaments surrounding your joints are loose. Sometimes this is called “ligamentous laxity”. There are genetic syndromes which involve hypermobility of connective tissue, like Marfan ..read more
