Self care as a Tarot reader (or finding chess)

I read for myself most days. Usually just a three card "what do I need to know?" But if I feel my mental health dipping, or that I am overwhelmed then I ask "what do I need to do today?" A key card over the last few days has been the High Priestess- and I've taken the time to connect with her a little more. One of the problems (and as problems go it is a good one) with my life is connection. My work is very connected. I see a lot of regular clients- and can find myself deeply connecting to their life and their issues in an empathic way. Then as soon as work is finished its straight into family ..read more

Mindset matters

Booking a shamanic healing, or Tarot reading, with me can be transformative and deeply healing. But its when you change your mindset that the magic really happens. I find myself giving the same advice to a lot of clients (often indicated by the King of Swords in a reading). If your inner critic is negative, always on the look out for problems, and keen to tell you its not worth starting anything (or changing) because it will all go wrong anyway - then this technique may help you. When we are caught in the grip of a negative inner critic (8 swords/ 9 swords/ Devil) then we are so focused on the ..read more

What can go wrong with Tarot?
Maddy Elruna
by Maddy Elruna

(secret answer…lots!) Focusing on reading for yourself rather than as a professional. The easiest thing to go wrong with Tarot is you allow the reading to scare you, or feed your fears. We’ve heard it a million times “there’s no such thing as a bad card”. It’s all well and good- but when you asked how your job interview would go and there is the Devil, 5 of pentacles and 5 of swords no one is going to feel uplifted. So how to guard against feeding your fears? · Don’t ask if you aren’t prepared to hear the answer. It is worth taking your time to consider the impact of a reading. Once you’ve see ..read more

I never chose Tarot- finally accepting it suits me well!

October is always a busy month for me, firstly family time is hectic- two birthdays with my kids (18 & 20 this year), and then we head to London for the MCM Comic-Con, all three days this year. On a personal level I hold my annual rune retreat. This is a small gathering of personal students, and the one event I co-host. Each year this is a "reset" and I find myself reflecting on the year and considering how I want the next year to look. One of the problems with my business (apart from how many hours it takes to support my family) is the complexity of blending rune-lore, shamanism, and Taro ..read more

How to read Tarot for yourself (and why I think it is so important)
Maddy Elruna

It can be easier to read for others than ourselves. I it is too easy to look at the cards and see what we expect to see, rather than actually read the cards to gain new insight. When we read for someone else we will have less expectations, and the flow can feel much easier. I do think it is important to read Tarot for ourselves (though I also book in with other professionals- I value their insight as well) for various reasons. · It’s a great way to learn (and continue learning!). I know myself better than anyone- so I see new things in the cards which keeps me diving ever deeper into the cards ..read more

Tarot, Timing, and natural cycles

Maybe instead of asking “when will it happen” it would be helpful to work with the cycles in your life- and use the Tarot to work with the natural rhythms. There are so many natural cycles to explore (and this blog is not exhaustive, nor detailed- it is a starting point for further reflection). And Tarot often offers so much more when we move from closed questions like "when will it happen" to broader questions "what does the Autumn look like fore me". Daily It seems simple to work with a daily rhythm- but for most of us that isn’t a natural rhythm, rather working with a 24 hour schedule. Havi ..read more

My five favourite ways to use Tarot for myself
Maddy Elruna

#1 When my mind is totally blocked. I often say to clients “the future isn’t fixed, but often our minds are”. I’m sure we all get to that point- where we have a problem, and we can only see one way to resolve it, but we know that won’t work- yet we just can’t find any other solution. The left brain is very good at working through evidence and information, but we need the right brain to be creative and original. I use Tarot when my mind is stuck on only way of solving something, and I know it’s not the best way. I usually mind map, asking the Tarot to suggest ideas, and then journal to help me ..read more

A "Tarot check in"
Maddy Elruna
by Maddy Elruna

Each of us create slightly different Tarot businesses, offering a slightly different service based on how we read, and how we communicate. I have a lot of regular clients who work with me- often over many years. A classic comment is “There’s nothing really wrong, I’m here for a check in”. I believe that when I read Tarot I am connecting to my client’s higher guidance- so I am not offering them “my” advice but telling them what they should already know- on some level or another. In fact, a common criticism my new clients is “I kind of new that already” and I have to point out- I don’t know them ..read more

Inspired for simplicity

One of the things I loved about my three weeks trip in Norway was the simplicity of life. With so much travelling- and 10 hours plus for each journey on public transport-travelling light was essential. In my rucksack I had my clothes, family games, and an air mattress. So my clothes were a very basic collection that could all be mixed and matched depending on the weather. And perhaps most of all I loved the Scandi feel air bnb’s. They were all very minimalist, often with a statement plant, and painted in soft blues, deep greys, or whites. And food was simple as well- a trip to the supermarket ..read more

Experiencing the landscape of the runes in Bodo
Maddy Elruna

After basing my life on the Younger Futhark runes, and the Norse pantheon I have finally managed a trip to Norway. We arrived (I travelled with my three sons) at- possibly my favourite place on the trip- Bodo. A small city in the Arctic circle with an strangely industrial feel, surrounded by ocean and snow-capped mountains. We were there for mind-summer ( a lucky chance) and the mid-night sun was disconcerting. The light didn’t really change, and the sun dipped below the horizon for a short time rather than setting. Day and night, light and dark- markers of our life. It confused us, we lost tr ..read more
