Living With Dementia

Where are all so-called friends? This is my experience. I was diagnosed with dementia at an early age. Right at the top, people and groups were supportive. But as time went on, they left, and there was no contact. I feel a lot of them thought I should have died a long time ago, and when I didn't, they thought you are faking, or really, it is not that. Every person is different, and their experience is different too. It isn't what you see in the movies or on TV. I have created a system for myself that has helped me live a semi-normal life. But I still have outbursts, I still forget things, I s ..read more

Why do people only ever assume dementia is solely memory problems?

I keep thinking about a conversation I was having with my chiropractor towards the back end of last week. My grandma used to be one of his patients and he often asks about her. We got talking about her dementia, and I was trying to explain to him that my grandma’s long and short term memory is actually fantastic still, but her communication is heavily declining and her behaviour is often very odd. But he was trying to explain to me that she will either struggle with her long term, or her short. And looked at me puzzled when I explained both aren’t really in decline, it’s just the way she comm ..read more

I tried searching their site and they asked for some contact info. That was yesterday. They immediately called me but I didn’t answer and let it go to VM. They have since called me 7 more times in 18 hours. This makes me think they are a MAJOR scam and just want to make money off our family’s situation. Am I right? Or are they actually worth talking to? submitted by /u/0nlyhalfjewish [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Flip 7 - a card game for a group of people with dementia

You will need: 2 decks of cards (different backs to avoid scrambling them), optional prizes Dealer deals 7 face-up cards to each player from one deck, then puts the rest of that deck aside. Dealer then turns over top card of second deck. If anyone has the matching card, they flip it over. Dealer continues to turn over cards from the second deck until someone has turned over all 7 of their cards and wins. (When I deal, the winner gets Mardi Gras beads.) submitted by /u/redcolumbine [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

My dad was diagnosed with early onset dementia a while back. He is now beginning to have hallucinations in the middle of the night about people from “the company” walking around their house out to get him. I don’t live with them but my mom is at a loss of what to do. If she says they aren’t there he gets angry and she’s beginning to fear he is going to become aggressive or try to leave the house. Any tips on what she could do or say to calm or redirect him? It’s happening right after he falls asleep and keeping them up all night. He was also put on a medication right after they started to try ..read more

One of the elders in the dementia ward where I work loves to rip things apart. She's not very strong, but she enjoys tearing up tissue boxes and crumpling all the tissues. What can I make for her out of normal household stuff or inexpensive supplies that she can tear up without making too much of a mess? submitted by /u/redcolumbine [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Mom's pretty advanced. rarely makes sense or looks at you, etc. Tonight she was kinda mentioning hallucinations, but was not scared or fighting and was pretty calm. She scratched dad pretty good toileting, tho, so as I sat there with her on the potty I grabbed the clippers. How are skin and bones so freaking strong???? Dad would try to hold her arm as I tried to slice the claws and not her skin, but she don't like that. DOMINO HELP! she knew & said my name. well, knew domino was her daughter. and called for me to come save her from the evil clippers lady. I'd talk after each clip, she was ..read more
