Here I am reading the book of Rowsandall.  In this book, I’ll provide a brief overview of the physics of rowing and measuring data in the boat, and how to combine these into a quantified training program. The second part is a collection of practical examples that help you apply the principles in your own environment. The book is available as a paperback which you can hold in your hand, take to the rowing club, fold the corners of the important pages, and scribble your own notes in the margin. You can purchase the paperback here. We’ll ship anywhere in the world. There is also a PDF that y ..read more

In-Stroke Metric Analysis Comparison
Rowing Analytics

The two charts demonstrate new functionality on Rowsandall.com. In the top chart I am comparing boat acceleration and seat curve analysis from the Quiske app, for two different workouts. In the bottom chart, I am comparing my stroke force profile (measured with NK Empower Oarlock and NK SpeedCoach), for two different races this season. Both charts have something in common. On Rowsandall, it was already possible to compare metrics like stroke rate, power, boat speed, etc between workouts. It was also possible to take a single workout and plot a stroke force curve plot, or take a single Quiske ..read more

Quiske offers innovative “rowing pods” that can be used on the erg and on the water to measure the dynamics of your stroke. Combined with the Quiske app on the water you can get instant feedback on Boat acceleration Seat velocity Oar angle curve On the erg, the pods can be used to give feedback about your rowing technique. When Rowsandall.com was discussing with Quiske recently, we learned that they are retiring their data portal, focusing on the app and pod. As a long-time Quiske user, I regretted not having a place to store my analyses, and as the developer of Rowsandall.com, I saw an oppo ..read more

Rojabo is a popular site that generates indoor rowing training programs. Rojabo works really easy: You indicate when you want to train, give some information about yourself (age, background training level, season goals), perform two simple tests on the ergometer, and then the site calculates a training program that helps you improve your erg scores and achieve your training goals. Many rowers have found that training with Rojabo helps them achieve their goals.  The service, developed by Danish elite rowers, has been running for many years already, and is thus tried and tested by large num ..read more

Quantifying Training Intensity Distribution – New Tool
Rowing Analytics

3y ago
In 2006, Stephen Seiler published an influential article in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, titled “Quantifying training intensity distribution in elite endurance athletes: is there evidence for an ‘‘optimal’’ distribution?” In the article, Seiler concluded that elite athletes spend relatively little training time at the lactate threshold intensity. Instead, the athletes followed a polarized approach, with more than 75% of the effort at relatively low intensities, and significant (15-20%) periods at intensities well above the lactate threshold. Since then, Seil ..read more
