WHEW! We did it! We finished our kindergarten year and what a fun year it was. The last week is full of days that are not the same and rarely follow a specific routine. I hope your child enjoyed his/her last week of school...here's our week breakdown! Monday: We started off by showing our families how smart we are by singing songs, counting to 100 and more during our Kindergarten Graduation Program. We learned so many things that we could not possibly put them all in our program, but we hope you enjoyed what we were able to share! We also received our own classroom awards and boogied down t ..read more

Reading: *We worked on the same strategy as last week! So the following is the same thing :). Our CAFE strategy this week was focused on Retell a Story in Order or Sequencing. Sequencing is one of many skills that contributes to students' ability to comprehend what they read. Sequencing refers to the identification of the components of a story — the beginning, middle, and end — and also to the ability to retell the events within a given text in the order in which they occurred. The ability to sequence events in a text is a key comprehension strategy, especially for narrative texts. Sequencin ..read more

Reading: Our CAFE strategy this week was focused on Monitor and Clarify. The Monitoring/Clarifying strategy teaches students to recognize when they don't understand parts of a text and to take necessary steps to restore meaning. Monitoring/Clarifying helps students to focus their attention on the fact that there may be reasons why the text is difficult to understand. Students can be taught to ask questions, reread, restate, and visualize making the text more comprehensible. When reading aloud with your child, actively discuss things that don’t quite make sense or purposely read something inco ..read more

Reading: Our CAFE strategy this week was focused on Cause and Effect. We learned that cause and effect means noting a relationship between actions or events such that one or more are the result of the other or others. We used this strategy during reading this week by focusing on problems and what caused them and how it effected the story. We also focused on various things characters did and how their actions (causes) affect different outcomes in a story. We discussed how if we were to change a specific cause in a book how that might change what happened next in the story. It is important as r ..read more

Reading: Our CAFE strategy this week was focused on Skip the Word and then Come Back. As experienced readers, when we come to an unfamiliar word in a text, we are usually able to use context clues to help us figure out what the word is. We use the accuracy strategy ´Skip the Word, Then Come Back without even knowing what we are doing. We have enough experience and practice as a reader to know this strategy works. When children come to words they don’t know some stall on the unknown word and are unable to move on. These children must learn strategies to help them move forward. This strategy t ..read more

Reading: Our CAFE strategy this week was focused on CROSS CHECKING. When reading a book for pleasure or for information, chances are you will come to a word or two you are unsure of. You probably will use the accuracy strategy of cross checking without even thinking about it, because it is second nature to you as a reader to read accurately. Accuracy is not second nature to children learning to read. It is something that needs to be taught using a variety of strategies. Your child has been introduced to the accuracy strategy of cross checking. It is important to slow readers down when they co ..read more

Reading: In reading this week, we focused on the “Make a Mental Picture”. Teaching this reading strategy is a very important one, not only in helping with reading comprehension but also in remembering daily events. If you have ever lost something or forgot where you put something, the first thing you usually do is retrace your steps and go back and visualize the last time you remember having it. Making a picture in our mind helps us recall events more clearly. The same is true when reading a story. When readers read or have a text read to them, they make a mental picture or movie in their min ..read more

Reading: In reading this week, we focused on the “Problem and Solution” in stories we read. The authors of most books we read have a character or characters that come across a problem and work throughout the story on ways to solve this problem. Sometimes we predict before reading the story as to what we might think could be a problem. Other times we might talk about the problem as it arises during reading and occasionally we will wait until the very end of the book to reflect back and talk about the problem and solution. We also discuss how we encounter problems in our everyday lives and we h ..read more

Reading: In reading this week, we focused on one specific literary element…”How Characters Change in a Story”. Literary elements work together to form and enhance the story. We learn literary elements separately, and then combine them in our mind for better understanding of the story. We learned that sometimes a character or characters change in a story. After reading stories this week we discussed how the characters behavior, attitude, beliefs and more can change in a story. It was fun to discuss the actual differences from the beginning, middle to the end of the story! To kick off our lear ..read more
