INVENTION ILLUSTRATIONS BEFORE PROTOTYPES
If you are trying to get financial help in producing prototypes, it is often worthwhile to do an invention illustration so people can understand your idea,
We are visual people with a better understanding of what we see rather than what we read or hear about. If you have a brilliant invention idea, you may need to convey its usefulness before the prototype is developed. That means you’ll need some kind of imagery of what it may look like and what it does. Product illustration is the visualization of your idea, a conceptual representation. It is used to ..read more

Ask Questions First – Then Invent
Companies license products based on their own needs, what they see in market trends and holes they see in their own product line. Your best chance to license a product is to offer companies a product that meets what companies perceive to be their needs.
How do you do that? Number one is you need to be a member of an industry. You need to attend trade shows, read trade magazines and make contacts with people in the industry. Some of my recent Invention 101 columns have dealt with how to make those contacts. But I’ve found it doesn’t work ..read more

Most trade magazines, targeted at retailers, distributors and salespeople of a particular industry, for example bikes, or hardware tools, have new product sections. You will also find that many consumer magazines dedicated to a user, such as Bicycling, or Bike magazines also will carry new product sections. Press releases are a great tool for inventors because magazine editors may publish information about your product in a new product section that might be read by key industry people who can help you. Often you will get i ..read more

Creating the Great Invention
All inventions start with an inspiration about something that needs great improvement, or just someone coming up what they think people would like. The question is now how to move from a problem that needs solving to an invention that will really work. I recommend the first four steps of any invention to be: 1) understanding all aspects of the problem or opportunity from an end-user point of view; 2) doing a search of available technologies; 3) brainstorming; and 4) choosing your best cho ..read more

I mentioned in an earlier post that one of the biggest tactics you need to pursue in order to be a successful inventor is to know your market, and to have contacts in your market that can help you. Most inventors don’t do this and they struggle. But learning and making contacts in your target market is something every inventor should be able to do. I’ve laid out the steps in this post, plus I’ve listed a group of questions at the end that inventors can use to start conversations with potential contacts.
