My son over the last few weeks has been acting a bit out of character. He did turn 6 recently directly after sping break where things were a bit loosey goosey. Main things we have noticed at home is emotionally being all over the place, he will slightly hit his finger/elbow and start screaming bloody murder. Also having a hard time controlling himself when his father, and or I are being serious about something, and he jokes off. His sister visits every other weekend, and they have been also fighting like cats & dogs…and quite frankly its been exhausting and I feel checked out hoping it wo ..read more

We'd like to setup an internal EYFS training and workshop at our school. Is there a recommended teacher training manual or book that we could use as the backbone of our training? submitted by /u/MPforNarnia [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Month three of no iPad

We are month three with no iPad. We all know the reasons to pull the screen. However, it’s hard. Due to behavior, we had enough. So we dedicated ourselves to pulling it. Wow. The change in our boy is amazing. No mood swings. No tantrums. No anger. He does creative play all the time now. We do allow TV and Xbox, but he has no interest in either, unless super bored. It went so well, we took away the 15-year old screens. He handled far worse than our 6-year old. If you’re on the fence, just commit to it and do it. It’s been amazing. submitted by /u/-Economist- [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Child Refuses to Work

My son just turned 4 last month. I am planning on having him start transitional Kindergarten in a few months (we live in CA). To help him prepare, I signed him up for a city program (3-5 year olds) for 2 hours twice a week where they practice writing their names, tracing, counting, etc. Every time I pick him up, the teacher says he did no work and his worksheets are all blank. When we are at home, I try to practice writing, letters, etc. and he refuses for me as well. The only thing I can do to motivate him is that he must write his name or some other small activity before he can watch a tv s ..read more

Drop off birthday parties?

I’m sure this has been asked several times but somehow my search function isn’t bringing up a lot (maybe too broad). But yeah.. Are you okay with dropping off your 5-6 year olds to birthday parties with parents you’ve never met? When hosts say “drop offs are encouraged if parents are comfortable”, they’d rather you drop the kid off, right? I’m sure the parents are fine (it will be at their house) but… I don’t know. submitted by /u/MollyAyana [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Chapter book series suggestions

My Kindergartener is a very strong reader. Can read pretty much anything, but I'm constantly struggling to find things that are developmentally appropriate for a 5 year old, but have enough words to interest her. She gets scared fairly easily -- has read a few magic treehouses, but the last one she read scared her when they got arrows shot at them She talked about it for days. Also any sort of drama tends to rile her up and upset her (and she doesn't really get it), she read a couple of Ramona books but I decided against continuing those. I reject a lot of the more popular series on those gro ..read more

Hi! I am new to this community so I’m not sure the mix of people who are here! Would love feedback from teachers and parents of kiddos K-2. I’m getting ready to help as a teacher for a summer camp at a preschool, but the kiddos are just all alumni (K-2). I’m a preschool teacher! I’m comfortable working with K-2 children, but I’m expected to help with curriculum, and I’m a bit lost. The theme is children’s book illustrations, focusing on fine arts, and I would love some ideas for art activities for that age range. Other guiding questions- What can I expect behaviorally with K-2 kids in an art ..read more

Field Study Supervision Expectations

Hi all, I’m wondering what your schools offer in this sort of situation. My 5yo’s kindergarten class is going outdoor education that involves a 15-20min walk through a wooded area to a pond. There are 48 students, and there will be 2 teachers+one assistant. The district ratios are meant to be 8:1 for field study, this has been waved for these outings. The vibe from the teacher seems to be this is how it’s always done, it’s always fine. Am I being weird not feeling like that’s enough? I’d be fine with even just four adults. I mean they have more supervision IN the classroom than that. Am I jus ..read more

Fricking Water Bottles

What do you do for water bottles at school for your kindergartners? Does your kid bring a reusable water bottle, or a disposable bottle of bottled water? Or just raw-dog the water fountain like a Gen Xer in 1993? We are nearing the end of the school year. By my count, we have been through at least 5 reusable water bottles this year. All have been either lost or broken. None have ever turned up in the school's lost and found. Prices range from $5-$15. (Probably more broken ones near the cheaper end of that scale.) For a while, we were sending disposables because we happened to have a pack of b ..read more
