From University of Vienna Older people who overestimate their health go to the doctor less often. This can have serious consequences for their health, for example, when illnesses are detected too late. By contrast, people who think they are sicker than they actually are visit the doctor more often. This is what a new study by Sonja Spitzer from the Institute for Demography at the University of Vienna and Mujaheed Shaikh from the Hertie School in Berlin found based on data from over 80,000 Europeans aged 50 and older. The results were published in The Journal of the Economics of Aging. Our conf ..read more

Jenna Henderson, N.D. Like most naturopathic doctors, I was drawn to alternatives when I reached the limits of mainstream medicine.  In my situation it was extreme, I was already in kidney failure when I enrolled in naturopathic college.  By that time, I had seen the worst of mainstream medicine.  Medical errors and negligence had nearly cost me my life on more than one occasion, and then there was all of the side-effects of medications.  Natural medicine seemed like a very viable option.  In 1993 I was diagnosed with the kidney condition Focal Segmental glomeruloscler ..read more

Katie Strobe, N.D. Night after night, I would stare blankly at my medical school application personal essay. I kept reflecting on my life story and  I wanted to become an allopathic doctor, and something just didn’t click. I was stuck. After endless contemplation, it finally hit me. There’s no way I could write this essay because I knew in my heart. I didn’t want to become this type of doctor. Leading up to this moment, I’d checked off all the boxes for someone wanting to become a medical doctor studied hard, received incredible grades, and earned my Bachelor of Science from the Universit ..read more

From Ohio State University Long before they enter a classroom, people learn to identify commonplace objects like a “dog” and a “chair” just by encountering them in everyday life, with no intent to learn about what they are. A new study is one of the first to provide experimental evidence that people learn from incidental exposure to things that they know nothing about and aren’t even trying to understand. Exposure to new objects makes humans “ready to learn,” said Vladimir Sloutsky, co-author of the study and professor of psychology at The Ohio State University. “We often observe new things ou ..read more

SHARUM SHARIF, ND  My primary care naturopathic practice has a focus on natural dermatology. I utilize a variety of naturopathic therapeutics to address skin diseases of all types, including warts, but my primary tool is homeopathy. I have successfully treated a few hundred patients with warts over the last nearly 2 decades, and I would like to share my findings with colleagues here to contribute to a world free from warts.  When properly selected, homeopathic remedies are nearly always completely curative with long-lasting effects. In my practice, I have only seen a single patient w ..read more

CHRIS D. MELETIS, ND  Aging – or more specifically, how to slow it down – is a topic that has fascinated scientists, doctors, and the general population for thousands of years. Yet despite our advancements in medicine and science, we still don’t know for sure about healthy aging or precisely what it takes to tip the scales into unhealthy aging.  Several years ago, I was a keynote speaker at an event in New York. My lecture was at 7 am. I flew in from Oregon and arrived at the hotel around 11 pm the night before the lecture. I started the lecture with a question: “How many cells in th ..read more
