A: Arthritis is a general term for conditions that affect one or more of the joints and surrounding tissues, causing inflammation, pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced motion. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, with the most common being osteo, rheumatoid, psoriatic and juvenile arthritis. Some others you may have heard of are gout, ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, lupus, scleroderma and septic arthritis.
