Dear Friends of the ANF   I hope you and yours have been staying well during this extraordinary time. Knowing many of you are being bombarded with information related to this pandemic, the ANF has been selective in sharing updates. However, I want to let you know about an extraordinary program we launched 3 months ago.   The Acupuncture Now Foundation was established as a non-profit (charitable) organization with a mission of educating the public, healthcare providers, and health policymakers about the practice of acupuncture.   Google has a program that offers approved chariti ..read more

Exposing Flaws in Acupuncture Research
Acupuncture Now Foundation

Since founding the “Acupuncture Now Foundation” 5 years ago, one of our goals was to bring attention to problems with research protocols that cause an underestimation of acupuncture’s effectiveness.  We took a big step toward achieving that goal with the publication of an editorial article in a peer reviewed journal; the March 2020 issue of the “Integrative Medicine Research” journal. You can download a free copy of that article here. I am going to be blunt here – in my opinion, the world of acupuncture research is a hot mess. There are many reasons for this but the biggest on ..read more

ENOUGH ALREADY!

By Matthew Bauer, L.Ac.   Many of you have no doubt seen the media reports about a study published this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that found “real” acupuncture to be no better than “sham” acupuncture when used to support In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) (1). This study joins a long list of “negative” studies that found real acupuncture to do no better than sham/placebo for many different conditions. Although findings such as these are often offset by other positive studies showing real acupuncture doing better than sham, acupuncture critics  site t ..read more

What is the Scientific Contribution when the Study Methodology has so Many Limitations?

By Carlo Maria Giovanardi, MD The following is a letter written by Dr. Giovanardi, President of the Italian Federation of Acupuncture Societies. This was submitted to the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the authors of the study on IVF published in JAMA in May 2018 regarding acupuncture to support IVF therapy. JAMA decided not to publish this saying they had received several letters in response to that study and could not publish them all. Dr. Giovanardi asked the ANF if we would consider publishing this and we are happy to do so. We also have publi ..read more

The Lack of Clinical Quality Guidelines Causes Underestimation of Efficacy in Sham Controlled Acupuncture Trials
Acupuncture Now Foundation

A serious flaw in the design of acupuncture research studies has been contaminating “sham controlled” clinical trials for decades. Unfortunately, this problem has been largely unacknowledged having only recently been questioned by researchers in China (1) even though it should be readily seen as rendering such trials incapable of answering the fundamental question they are designed to answer: How much of acupuncture’s clinical effects are due to placebo effects or the real but “nonspecific” effects of needling anywhere? The flaw I am referring to is not the one that has been widely (and rig ..read more

Master Tung Part Two: Low Back Pain

I think talk is cheap. It’s easy to sit around and talk about how great this system is, or how wonderful that point is, or what a good job we did. I think the only measuring stick we should use is “do our points and our style end the pain and suffering of others?” And more important, “do they work more than 80 to 85 percent of the time?” I think the strength of the Master Tung points is one of predictability. My favorite example is when I ask my wife, who isn’t an acupuncturist, to needle me. Sometimes I have pain and I can’t needle myself so I ask her if she’ll do it. I tell her exactly wher ..read more

“PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW.” Why we must make “Getting to the Point” & How the Acupuncture Community Can Make it Happen
Acupuncture Now Foundation
by

The Acupuncture Now Foundation was formed two years ago making bold claims such as it being possible to double the number of people seeking acupuncture services within 5 years, and to bring down the barriers of misunderstanding preventing acupuncture from meeting its’ true potential. I still believe those goals can happen and that making the documentary “Getting to the Point” (GTTP) will do more to make that happen than anything else we could possibly do. But the real reason we must make GTTP is because there are thousands more Cade Spinellos out there, and their families that could be helpe ..read more
