My Korean Ramblings
by mykoreanramblings

A/V + 해 갔다 is effectively the opposite of 해 왔다. It means that an action or state is continuing now, and is on the way to completion: 사라져 가는 동물들을 보호해야 해요. We need to protect animals that are becoming extinct. 참을성이 다 되어 가요… 그만하시죠! My patience is wearing thin (it’s almost all done)… I said quit it! 이제부터 한국어를 열심히 공부해 가겠어요. V + 아/어/해 왔어요 is an auxiliary verb pattern that shows that you have been doing something continuously up until the present. Note that there is usually a space between the main verb and 왔어요: 저의 가장 좋은 친구가 서울에서 자라 왔어요. My best friend was born and bred in Seoul. 저는 테크노를 들으며 자라 왔어요. I’ve grown up listening to techno. 이 일을 해 왔어요. I’ve been doing this job until now. 이제까지 한국어를 열심히 공부해 왔어요. I have been studying Korean diligently until now. 어릴 때부터 피아노를 쳐 왔어요. I can’t even tell you how… (Exaggeration): 얼마나 ㄴ/은/는지 모르다
My Korean Ramblings
by mykoreanramblings

얼마나 A/V + ㄴ/은/는지 exaggerates the magnitude of a feeling or action. If used with a verb it usually needs an adverb, e.g. 많이, 못, 열심히, 오래… 시험을 위해 얼마나 열심히 공부를 했는지 D로 겨우 통과했어요! I can’t even tell how hard I studied for the test… and then I barely passed with a D! 가게 밖에 줄이 너무 겨서 얼마나 오래 기다렸는지 몰라요. The queue outside the store was so long that I couldn’t even tell you how long I was waiting. 실수를 해서 제가 얼마나 미안한지 몰라요. I can’t tell you how sorry I am for my mistake. 얼마나 화가 나는지 얼굴이 빨갛게 변하고 고함을 질렀어요. I was so inexplicably angry, my face turned red and I was shrieking. 딸의 음악 공연을 구경하고 얼마나 깊은 인상을 받았는지 몰라요. I was ..read more
