KC Landmark in Autumn Glory
John Keeling Paintings

I recently completed this commissioned watercolor of the Nelson-Atkins museum. Working from photos I'd taken a few years ago, when the ginkgo trees were stunningly beautiful... the place seemed to glow in the autumnal sunshine. I wanted to capture that feeling in my painting. Prints available very soon here on my website ..read more

Almost Heaven

This original watercolor, "Almost Heaven," has recently been added to my Shop here on the website. It can also be purchased on a Father's Day greeting card at Trader Joe's. I find fly fishing to be beautiful... the way the sunlight catches the line as it is cast across the water. And doing so with "man's best friend," makes it even more compelling to me ..read more

The Horse in Winter
John Keeling Paintings

I'm enjoying exploring the subject of horses. It has been bitterly cold here recently, and I find this painting I did of two wild horses from the EcoSanctuary near Laramie, WY, speaks to the harshness of the winter on all of us. Still, despite the brutal weather, there is beauty and warmth to be found when we seek it ..read more

The Year of the Horse
John Keeling Paintings

As we begin 2018, I'm declaring it "The Year of the Horse" for my studio intention. Realizing that the Chinese Year of the Horse was 3 years ago, I am doing this now for my personal motivation and focus on exploring this wonderful subject matter in my work. I began the year with this painting of a cowboy and his horse. I'm attracted to both the horse and the cowboy, but it is the relationship the two share I find most compelling. My good friend, Dennis Goodwin, commissioned the portrait of his horse, Bo, shown here in the second image. I completed it as part of Jill Soukup's Painting Horses Wo ..read more

I'm thrilled to have my watercolor prints NOW AVAILABLE at west elm on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO. West elm is wonderfully supportive of local artists across the country, inviting us to have "pop-up shops" in their stores. I've had four pop-ups there and now a selection of my watercolor prints are available as part of their KC Local line. These images are of two of the available prints and a west elm postcard I created for the holidays ..read more

Nesting instincts

I enjoy watching the birds in the garden this time of year, as they work diligently to build their nests. Seeing the eggs hatch into new little birds is such a joy, as is watching them bravely leave the nest within weeks. Today I'm adding five new watercolor bird paintings, all available in 8 x 10" fine art prints (see my Shop Prints page). I hope you'll enjoy browsing my new work as much as I enjoy watching and painting the birds. Here's a robin to get the week started. Look for more every day this week ..read more

Seeing Red!
John Keeling Paintings

With all the gray, dreary weather we've had lately here in Kansas City, I'm thankful for the bright dashes of color that the cardinals bring each winter. I recently captured one such bird in watercolor in my studio. It brings me joy and I hope it does the same for you. I'm also sharing a recent custom pet portrait of a dear childhood friend's dog. Thanks to Dave Adkins for commissioning this painting of "Scout" as a Christmas present to himself. I've been busy painting other commissions, but I cannot post any of them as they are Christmas gifts and I don't want to spoil the surprise ..read more
