Van Gogh painted The Mulberry Tree in October of 1889, during his stay at the sanitorium Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-en-Provence.  He checked into the institution on May 8th, 1889 to recover from a series of mental breakdowns, including the infamous ear incident and a suicide attempt.  His time in the asylum was a refuge from the social mores and expectations of everyday life. Models were not always easy for Van Gogh to come across.  His mercurial moods and his unusual art style often prevented him from finding people willing to pose for his work.  Yet in Arles, Van Gogh made close friends with people who were happy to sit for him – the Roulin family, a group of people who lived only a few houses down from him.   Joseph Roulin was the father, married to Augustine.  The couple had three children: Armand, Camille, and Marcelle, a baby girl  born during the time that Van Gogh knew the family.  He created around 25 paintings of the fam ..read more

Starry Night Over the Rhône

The words “starry night” invoke the image of one of Van Gogh’s most well-known paintings – a cypress tree painted against a background of midnight blue pocked by swirling stars grows into the mind.  However, this is not the only starry night that Van Gogh created.  In 1888, Van Gogh painted Starry Night Over the Rhône. A quick geography lesson: the Rhône river begins in the Swiss Alps.  Its mouth is in the Mediterranean Sea.  It winds its way through southern France before splitting at Arles into two different rivers, the Big Rhône and the Little Rhône, to form the Camargue ..read more
