Howdy, i grew up on the chesapeake fixing up old sail boats and seeing if they didnt sink. I worked on the 105' schooner Alliance in Yorktwon for a few seasons in addition to working on a tug, and training at chesapeake marine training institute. I recently captained a 50' Lagoon for my bros bachelor party in bvi. Also worked in marina. Are there any transporters who need a hand? I am going through a divorce, and am ready to try a maritime career again. My mmc is expired but willing to renew, even if not necessary; take maritime operations very seriously, even though I joke about most everyth ..read more

What's better for me? Laser 4.7 (ILCA 4), Radial (ILCA 6) or Standard (ILCA 7)?

Hello! I am 155 lbs (70 kg) and 5'7 (1cm). I was wondering what should I use. I am overweight for 4.7, but the thing is that as I am short I don't know if I will be able to handle a Radial. Or even a Standard. What is your opinion? submitted by /u/Zealousideal-Tap-242 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is my long term live aboard plan sustainable?

18 months from now I plan on buying and living aboard a Beneteau Oceanis 45 in Puerto Rico for 6 months out of the year, and from there cruising the Caribbean/Bahamas. After purchasing the boat, ideally I will have around 400-500k invested in the S&P500 that I don’t want to touch. I also have a military pension of $3,737 a month that I hope will be enough to survive on during those 6 months. After the season is over, I’ll put the boat on the hard and go back to work for 6 months and earn around 80k and max my 401k during that time, then invest what’s left over. Rinse and repeat forever. I'm sure we've all seen the question and answers around how do you sleep when sailing solo..... 20 min naps etc. I've just brought my boat home from where we left her after last years travelling (1100NM north.) I did 11 days with 2 stops and noticed the appalling lack of sleep and how much it affected me just napping for 20 mins at a time. I just think it's interesting to share from this week, how my garmin watch records the "sleep" I did 48 hrs 250 miles solo midday Monday to wednesday(today). the images show a normal nights sleep Sunday to Monday followed by Monday to tueaday and Tuesda ..read more

I know an older couple who are going to be on a boat full- time for a few months. Any good gift ideas? Small boat, ice box storage for fridge, one bedroom, no heated water (that’s all I know. I’m not a sailing person) submitted by /u/Hour_Pepper_6771 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi there, I've an 8m sailboat about to move to her new home via road so the mast will be unstepped and secured down. What are the chances I along with friends can man handle the mast back again (re step)? Crazy idea and I should just hire a crane? submitted by /u/Jaded_Hippo_853 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

We had an amazing series this year. Sailed off the dock ten times, set all nineteen sails four times, got to view the eclipse whilst underway, and even sailed off the dock under tops’ls and t’gallants! submitted by /u/westsailor [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
