It’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month – 9th Edition
It Is What It Is!

Yep, in the 10 years since I was diagnosed with PD, I have written at least one post in April about Parkinson’s Awareness Day, or Week or Month. The only year missing is 2018 when we were moving into our Sarasota home. I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane and see what I wrote about in the past 10 years. The first year was 2014 (click on the links to view) and most of the post was about Autism, my colonoscopy, my first dermatologist visit and how nice the weather was that week, Finally… Continue reading ..read more

It’s Giving Tuesday!
It Is What It Is!
by Tom Eckhardt

A quick reminder that tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, a great time to make a donation to your favorite charity, no matter what the cause. Several of the PD Foundations will be matching your donation on Tuesday and I’m sure that is also true for other charities. It is a great opportunity to make a difference. Eight years…
It Is What It Is!
by Tom Eckhardt

ago, I received my “You have Parkinson’s Disease” diagnoses from my neurologist.  A lot has happened in those eight years most of which is chronicled on this blog, which I started a few weeks after my diagnoses.   A few weeks ago I met with my current neurologist who was pleased with my slow disease progression since last year’s visit.  He had no suggestions for changes to my current medication and feels (as I do) that my exercise regimen is a primary reason for keeping PD at bay.  Of course my PD has progressed, I don’t move a quick as I… Continue reading ..read more

This is my eighth World Parkinson’s Day and my 7th post on the subject (skipped 2018). You can read my earlier posts by selecting the Archives tab above and then Apr to view the post for that year. If you did that, you would see posts ranging from reporting on the annual Oak Ridge PD walk to ranting about awareness for the other 11 months of the year. In between are posts about cycling in the lobby of the YMCA, the Unite for PD campaign and quotes from other bloggers. Last year’s post was a review of the book Ending… Continue reading ..read more

Give a Dime About Parkinson’s
It Is What It Is!
by Tom Eckhardt
3y ago
In 1938 FDR and millions of americans led a march of dimes to end polio. On March 16th, PD Avengers and Ending PD will kick off We Give a Dime about Parkinson’s with a goal of mailing over 10,000 Red Letters to the Whitehouse asking for Presidential support to end PD now. In the book Ending PD (see my review here) one of the goals is to advocate for increased awareness and the campaign to end Polio was one of the examples of how we could meet that goal. Please join us in this effort. You can find out how… Continue reading ..read more

It Is What It Is!

Happy New Year!!  I don’t know about you but I have never been so happy to leave a year behind.  It has been a year of trials and tribulations and wrinkled hands from so much washing.  We have averaged  5 – 7 books per week since March, lived through almost 3 months with no tennis and discovered Zoom can be used for just about everything from exercise classes to family gatherings.   We have survived not eating out unless we can eat outside, wearing a mask everywhere you go, and not hugging.  We go nowhere except to the grocery store and… Continue reading ..read more

It Is What It Is!

Last  month  marked the 7th anniversary of my official “you have Parkinson’s Disease” diagnosis from my first neurologist.   During the past 7 years  I’ve become very knowledgeable about PD, discovered tennis, turned into an exercise junkie to help slow the progression of my PD,  and moved to Florida. Meanwhile, after 200 + years Levadopa/Carbidopa, discovered 50 years ago, continues to be the main treatment for the symptoms of PD.  A lot of research has been done trying to identify the cause of PD and a number of new medications have been developed to deal w ..read more

I know this is my second post in less than 30 days! I think I have too much free time on my hands while practicing this social distancing routine! Today I will catch up with what’s happening in PD School 2020 and talk a bit about how I have implemented what I’ve learned so far. If you aren’t aware of Dr. Mischley’s PD School 2020 you can read more about it my posts here and here. And check out the coupon offer at the end of this post! The last lesson I covered was lesson 3 so I will quickly… Continue reading ..read more

First and foremost, I hope this post finds you and your families well and hunkered down as we wait out the COVID-19 pandemic.  It is an unprecedented time in our lives and I have no idea how it will all end up but I have the cleanest hands in the neighborhood! Today, April 11th, is World Parkinson’s Day, a part of Parkinson’s Awareness month.  In past years, we have celebrated with Parkinson’s Disease walks and last year we moved our Pedaling for PD class out into the lobby of the YMCA to bring attention to PD and the need for… Continue reading ..read more

PD School 2020 – Update
It Is What It Is!
by Tom Eckhardt

This will be a short blog post regarding the PD School being conducted by Dr Laurie Mischley which I wrote about in the last post. A few days ago I received the following message from Dr Mischely: Hi Tom, Yours was one of many requests I’ve received the past few days to make class #1 free.  Done. It is now free.   Thanks for helping spread the word!   Laurie   If you have or have not watched the first class, you now have an opportunity to not only watch it but forward that class to family members, friends, care givers and… Continue reading ..read more
