After hearing about our work and recent activity at Harrow based care home Birchwood Grange, the Canadian news organisation ‘Global News’ featured BAT in a special article about the paddle power of ping pong! With more than 500,000 Canadians living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, which is expected to hit 1 million within 15 years, ‘Global News’ were interested in BAT’s drug-free approach. Residents and members of the team at Cherry Garth care home at Holmer Green, High Wycombe, inspired by BAT and the Rio fever, have taken up playing ping pong! The care home, which is run by local charity, The Fremantle Trust, has introduced table tennis as a regular activity on the back of BAT and our upcoming research looking at how it can help reduce cognitive decline and improve long-term memory for those living with dementia. BAT are super proud that one of our key volunteers and biggest advocates has been honoured for his work with the BAT Foundation! Brian Kerr, a ping pong coach and bus driver based at Ash Grove in London, was highly commended by his employer Arriva in their national ‘Making a Difference’ Award last month. Not only did Brian receive an award in the ‘Giving’ category, he also received recognition for his contribution to BAT in the ‘Arriva Community Action Gold’ Award, which included a £1,000 that Brian amazingly donated to BAT too!
