Low Nickel Self Care

How do you define and engage in self care? For me, self care involves specific daily actions I deliberately do to both take care of my own needs and my overall health and well being.  Before learning how to survive during a global pandemic, I believed self care was something I planned a couple times a month when I had free time or was experiencing extreme stress. That’s when I would schedule acupuncture, a nice massage, or a vacation getaway. Sometimes I considered it to be selfish to take time for myself and prioritize my own needs.  These past two years have made me acutely aware o ..read more

When eating a low nickel diet, do you miss eating tacos and burritos? Look no further than these mouthwatering low nickel beet and butternut squash tacos garnished with a tasty lime cream sauce that brings everything together!  There are plenty of ways to spice up tacos and burritos without beans, lettuce, tomatoes or avocadoes. In addition to these beet and butternut squash tacos, chicken, beef, or fish street tacos are great low nickel alternatives. One of my favorite low nickel burritos was made with sweet potatoes, shallots, garlic and roasted bell peppers, all of which are lower nick ..read more

When I met Christy, I knew I hit the jackpot of partners. When we married, I felt like the luckiest person on Earth. I’ve seen the torment, pain and embarrassment she’s suffered over the years, trying to deal with her eczema. When her doctor finally diagnosed her with a nickel food allergy, I was relieved but knew, she would need help. It was a long list of foods, many of which were healthy for me, but very bad for her. Here is a list of some strategies and attitudes that have helped both of us navigate the complexities of an obscure, readily dismissed, but serious food allergy. Memorize The L ..read more

Right now, do you feel confident in your own skin? Do you harshly examine little blemishes? Or do you choose to rejoice your freckles or wrinkles? Today, my skin looks great, but that’s not always the case. There are times when I’m really embarrassed by my skin. Or I’m frustrated by my inability to prevent my eczema from flaring. A couple months ago, I experienced a new form of eczema around my nose and mouth. Luckily mask wearing fashionably covered this area of my skin. Living with eczema is exhausting, itchy, and emotionally draining. Until recently I didn’t frame my eczema or systemic nick ..read more

Low Nickel Sugar Cookies

Do you love to bake during the holiday season? Growing up my Mom and family always baked a variety of cookies for us to enjoy when we played board games during the holiday break. Family favorites included a fudge oat cookie with chocolate and peanut butter, white and red sugar canes and peanut butter kisses.  Sweet sugar cookies covered in sprinkles and icing have always been my favorite low nickel cookie option. The best part about using nickel free plastic cookie cutters is they will never rust after years of use like traditional stainless steel cookie cutters. Sugar cookies don’t need ..read more

Nickel Food Allergy

Our oral health is the gateway to overall health and well being. There’s nothing worse than having a tooth ache!  Often heavy metals can be contained in the dental care we receive. There is plenty of research highlighting nickel allergies from braces, wires and other orthodontic devices. Some metal dentistry devices or implants can contribute to an individual’s systemic nickel allergy. There’s research noting the amount of nickel from dental devices tends to be significantly less than that ingesting foods higher in nickel. If you know you’re already hypersensitive to nickel, it might ..read more

Maybe you recently returned from your doctor’s office, after a skin patch test, or perhaps you’re searching for answers about living with systemic nickel allergy. Many times the actual diagnosis can be confusing and overwhelming. There’s no magic bullet or fast acting solution for treating your nickel allergy.  Moving forward when you’re first diagnosed can feel like hiking up a mountain without a map. You will figure out what’s best for you, even if the process takes time and I am referring to months or even years. Don’t be discouraged by this fact. This rapidly evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) is a historic public health crisis none of us are going to forget. Engaging in safe practices such as more thorough handwashing, avoiding touching my face and staying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic is quite the change. A month ago I purchased tickets to visit New York City for the first time and there’s no way I’m traveling much outside of my neighborhood, let alone across the country.  If anyone’s prepared for this it’s you and me. With our systemic nickel allergy we’ve learned the importance of avoidance and preparing homemade food from ..read more

What About Alcohol & Nickel Allergies?
Nickel Food Allergy

Who doesn’t love chilling with a cocktail when catching up with good friends or to celebrate a big accomplishment? Drinking alcohol (responsibly of course) is fun and relaxing.  Did you know the heavy metal nickel is sometimes directly added to beer as a foaming agent? Neither did I until one of you told me! Frankly I don’t know to what extent nickel is in beer or if it’s found overwhelmingly in one particular beer style over another. There’s more research than I expected about nickel being added during the production process. Over the last couple years I stopped drinking my favorite bee ..read more

Low Nickel Condiments
Nickel Food Allergy

There’s nothing worse than eating bland tasteless food. Why sacrifice flavor when there are so many low nickel alternatives? Often only adding a little seasoning or sauce can entirely change an entree! Condiments can range from garnishes, meat marinades, dipping sauces or seasonings used to add flavor to a meal. Eating a restricted diet doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t relish flavorful foods. Before my nickel food allergy diagnosis, I was in college and I revealed in eating the same thing day after day. I used to tell others “I’m not a sauce person.” Once my diet became severely restricted ..read more
