I'm pretty sure that most people in China are fine people regardless of their country's political standing. However, this post is not about that at all. This post is not about their government or our government (not completely, at least) but is a comparison of a product that is near and dear to all beekeepers. Many new beekeepers know that applying smoke to the colony has a calming affect on the bees but few know why. This article explains the two primary effects of applying smoke to a honey bee colony. The Two Main Effects Masking pheromonesSince honey bees do a lot of communication using their sense of smell by emitting and interpreting pheromones, applying smoke to a honey bee colony tends to disrupt or mask their sense of smell. When a honey bee stings, it emits pheromones. When a colony is under attack, they emit pheromones. When the queen is present, she emits pheromones. So, by applying smo ..read more

I was at a feed and seed store looking for a new hive tool when I noticed a small bag of packaged burlap that was advertised for use as smoker fuel. The little gentleman next to me examining a smoker may have only been five or six years old. "Hey little mister. Are you a beekeeper?" I asked the little man. "Yes sir, we have bees. My daddy is a beekeeper too." Said the little fella with an all-knowing look on his face while vigorously two hand pumping the billows on a new smoker he just took off the shelf. Curious about whether he and his dad were using Italians, Russians or other breed of bee ..read more

Our first drawing winner is Mark Crider. I believe Mark is currently stationed in Italy and I'm not certain he is keeping bees until he gets back state side. I'm waiting for him to respond to my email so we can figure out what we're doing with his prizes. We may have to change things up a little depending on his situation. His prize package is a Beetle Buster bottom board from Bruce Wallace. https://www.beetlebusterbeekeeping.com/ He also gets an insulated glass inner cover (the Innerview) from Bee Gold Honey. https://beegoldhoney.com/. Total package value is approximately $140 not including ..read more
