2021 RAINBOW RIVER RACE

My first important surfski race of 2021 had me returning to the Rainbow River in Florida, to line up along side some of Florida’s best for a 12 mile up and back down this magnificently beautiful spring fed river. Most surfski races tend to be a battle of attrition. A lead group would establish early and then over the course of the race, folks would pop off the back due to the accumulated effort. I really didn’t expect the Rainbow Race to be very different, especially once it was clear that a few high caliber racers would also be competing. I know most of the race course quite well, however I ..read more

Chris Hipgrave
by Chris Hipgrave

A well researched and practiced nutrition plan for Chattajack is very important, especially so for the later stages of the race where stories of spectacular bonks in the closing miles are too common. However, that plan will be different for everyone. Just because it worked for your buddy, doesn’t mean it will work for you. BONK – MATH Calories are simply units of energy. In simple terms, the harder we paddle, the more calories we’re going to burn in order to fuel that effort. Bigger folks will burn more calories than smaller. The weather can even impact calories burned. Carbohydrates are your ..read more

CHATTAJACK 2020 – TRAINING
Chris Hipgrave
by Chris Hipgrave

It goes without saying, but Chattajack is a paddling race, therefore, paddling should be your primary form of training. If you’re new to paddling endurance events, then the best thing you can do is simply paddle more! But even if you’re a mildly seasoned paddler, you soon realize there is only so much time in your week you can devote to your training. So getting the most out of your valuable time is paramount to Chattajack success. TEMPO – This may sound counter intuitive when preparing for a 31 mile, 4+ hour race, but high intensity work is still critically important, as it raises your funct ..read more

Wearable health & fitness trackers are everywhere these days and the business is exploding with options from Apple, Garmin, Polar and a plethora of others. But most devices track and focus on the fitness or basic health components of your daily lives. So when I found Whoop 3.0 and its focus on the recovery side of training, I did some homework and became fascinated at the breadth of data I could use to peak my athletic performance on the water, especially as recovery becomes more and more important as we age. So the review below is based on almost 6 months of ownership and daily use, and ..read more
