IRMAA is taken care of! I'm thrilled.

I retired at the end of August, after all bonuses and retention incentives had paid out. Because it had been a good year, I knew I was likely to get a hit with IRMAA, both with Medicare B and D. Because we file jointly, this affected both my wife and me. She has her Medicare premiums and IRMAA deducted from her Social Security (I haven't claimed yet), and so the monthly payout is also significantly reduced. There's a two-year look-back, so if you don't file an appeal based on a significant life event (like retiring), it'll take a couple years for the IRMAA to drop away. But two weeks ago, I s ..read more

Have you found real remote work?

I get tons of ads for remote work but many are just influencers trying to make a buck. I’m a retired teacher, so I could tutor and am also interested in doing research. Does anyone do part time remote work, and if so, what do you do and how might I find these jobs? I’m just looking for 2-4 hours a day. Something to give me structure. submitted by /u/Huge_Prompt_2056 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I discovered that you can announce your retirement too early.

Early this month I had my annual review with my supervisor. I'm 65 and he asked my plans for retirement. I was honest and said I'd retire at the end of 2024, when I'm 66 and after I finished some major assignments (we are a consulting/ engineering type of business). He told the big boss, which is fine with me (I expected that). But, I met with the big boss this week and got a super frosty reception that was repeated over the course of a couple of days (we normally get along great). I feel that I should not have announced my plans so early. So, my advice to others...consider giving no more tha ..read more

I have been scanning my old photos and I love the memories.

Bought a scanner, and started sorting photos. The sorting was good, as i got rid of scenery photos, and sorted them into sides of the family, friend groups, by timeline etc. Not a hard sort. They are currently in photo boxes. Getting stuff out of albums is a real pain. Started scanning. I do not have an autoloader, just a flatbed, but can scan several at once. I label each, and sort into folders. Some go in more than one folder. I date them when able as well. I have been sending some to the friends and family in the photos, or their kids, and they too love it. Some of these photos I had never ..read more

Daytime errands are so much easier

So, two weeks ago retired after working for 50 years in the building and construction industry. I’ve basically been just decompressing since then, even though I still can’t sleep in. I still wake up at 5am every day with the difference being that now I relax with a pot of coffee while reading online news, feeding our feral cat who lives under our deck and basically just chilling. Here’s a dumb little revelation I have had though: running errands during the day is amazing! I can run to the store in half the time it takes during the weekends. I’m looking forward to more small revelations as I e ..read more

Why are we afraid of retirement?

I retired last year at 60. My wife plans on retiring next April at 60 as well. We’ve done ok in life relatively speaking. We will be able to buy a retirement home and live near our kids fairly comfortably. That being said everyone we talk to that’s our age seems HORRIFIED that we’d even consider it. They are all afraid of retirement. I believe our parents (the last generation to be directly affected by the depression) made us afraid of retiring. If we have some money we need more. You have to keep working. Is that a common experience? submitted by /u/jbahel02 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How not to get overwhelmed with tasks

Hello, fellow retirees! Can anyone please offer any advice on how not to get overwhelmed with tasks that need completing? For example, I start cleaning up the family room and then think to myself “I have to clean the garage so I can get the water heater installed” or “I have to return stuff to Amazon and go to the post office and grocery shopping”. I feel overwhelmed and end up doing everything poorly. Thanks in advance. submitted by /u/PrudentSyllabub636 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Can I wing it without a financial planner?

My credit union has financial planners who, for a limited time, are offering to create a financial outlook/plan for retirees at no cost. My contact there also draws commissions from certain investment instruments, as well as working for the credit union. But he is first and foremost a fiduciary. Anyway, he gave us recommendations, and hopes we'll use him as an advisor. But there's no pressure at all to do so. So far, he's answered 2 follow up emails. But not sure how long I can do that without wearing out my welcome. I have many questions and will for a while. But also, honestly, I don't want ..read more

(TLDR: A 2 min stream of consciousness about growing up in Los Angeles, CA. What’s Your Story?) One of my earliest memories is riding my bike on the street - where I saw a provocative-looking woman loitering near the bus stop, a man with a doo rag outside a barbershop, and a stray dog that chased me. My childhood in Los Angeles, California, was more like Sanford and Son than Leave It To Beaver. I stocked shelves at my parents' corner store as an eight-year-old boy. On Saturdays, I frequently street skated on my homemade skateboard, with old, broken metal skate wheels nailed to a wooden board ..read more
