Those who want to get ahead of Thursday morning’s water cooler conversation can stay up late Wednesday night to see the gold medal awarded in women’s ice hockey at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
It’ll be Team USA against Team Canada in a rivalry game that is a rematch of the 2018 Pyeongchang gold medal final. At the last Olympics, the United States won in a 3-2 shootout. It also is a rematch of the women’s World Championship final in August, where the Canadians bested the U.S. in overtime.

Simone Biles had herself a pretty good Valentine’s Day.
The four-time Olympic gold medal gymnast on Instagram announced her engagement to Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens after nearly two years of dating.
“THE EASIEST YES,” she captioned the post that included a photo of Owens proposing. “I can’t wait to spend forever & ever with you, you’re everything I dreamed of and more! let’s get married FIANCÉ.”

Men’s hockey is underway at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and local college players got their teams off to quite the start.
With the NHL deciding to walk back its decision to allow players to compete at the Olympics amid the COVID-19 pandemic, teams are depending on top NCAA talent, as well as NHL alumni, in their quest for a gold medal.

Mikaela Shiffrin did not get off to the start she hoped for at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Shiffrin, the defending gold medalist in the giant slalom, will not have an opportunity to defend her Olympic title after the 26-year-old skied out during her first run of the event on Monday in Beijing. Because she did not complete the run, Shiffrin is disqualified and will not compete in the second run.
Shiffrin fell and missed a gate early in her run.

Team USA found itself down an important player in its preliminary round game in the 2022 Beijing Olympics against Finland on Thursday morning.
Brianna Decker got tangled up with Ronja Savolainen behind Finland’s net and remained down for several minutes after her leg appeared to get caught under Savolainen’s. The assistant captain could be heard screaming after going down before a stretcher came out.
The USA broadcast announced Decker, who’s participating in her third Olympics, would not return to the game.
Decker won gold in 2018 in PyeongChang and silver in 2014 in Sochi.

David Krejci has been enjoying success in Czech Republic, scoring goals at a near-career-high rate, and he’ll put his skills on display next month in Beijing.
The former Boston Bruins center was named to the 2022 Beijing Olympics, which are set to take place next month, his new team Olomouc tweeted Thursday morning.
“Olomouc forward David Krejčí was officially nominated for the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing today. Congratulations and we wish you a lot of hockey success!” the tweet read.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will go on as scheduled in Beijing, China.
… Well, for now at least.
With COVID-19 cases skyrocketing due to the new Omicron variant, some have wondered if a postponement of the games was necessary. The International Olympic Committee, however, made it clear Wednesday that they will go on as scheduled.
The Beijing Games are set to kick off Feb. 4 but there still are plenty of questions surrounding the event including length of a quarantine, when an athlete can return to action after recovering from COVID-19.

Team Canada clearly views Claude Julien highly, and with NHL personnel not taking part in the Olympics, it’ll be the ex-Montreal Canadiens boss behind the bench in Beijing.
Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper was tabbed to coach the Canadiens in the tournament, but when the NHL backed out, it left Canada with a vacancy to fill. According to NHL Insider John Shannon, it’ll be Julien taking over.
Julien coached Team Canada in the Channel One Cup, and was supposed to coach them in the Spengler Cup later this month before they elected to back out over COVID-19 concerns.
