Artist Spotlight: Jane
“My name is Jane, I am 57 years old. . . I have an interest in past human activity, natural science, and the history of visual communication. Just outside my door, I find stem points, and other artifacts dating back to the Middle Archaic period, and as late as the 1800’s during the time they were wiped out by settlers and disease. Using microscopy I photograph what I find outside in nature: pieces of bone, coal, wood, metal, and other organic materials. I also carve human figures of archaic man out of wood. . . I have carved wood since [I was] in my 20s. I st ..read more

Artist Spotlight: Jon-Keith Gary
“I was diagnosed with Autism/PDD at the age of 3 years, 3 months of age. Until that point, I developed normally, including speech, and I was reading. At some point, I regressed, and lost speech and the ability to communicate. I displayed many characteristics that are part of the autism spectrum: sensitivity to sound and fabrics; hiding in small spaces, not wanting to be hugged, spinning, humming, and running away in stores and parking lots. I attended a special public school and over a two-year period, my speech was restored. My parents did not treat me any di ..read more

With growing access to diagnosis toolkits for diverse populations and increased social awareness of autism through hashtags like #ActuallyAutistic on social media sites, more communities are becoming aware of the need for neuro-inclusion. Creating neuro-inclusive communities can begin in many places, but a common question that many come across when trying to become better allies is: “How do I begin to make changes in the workplace to support neuro-inclusion?” It can seem intimidating to try and address such a complex topic, espe ..read more

Five Tips for Stress Management on the Spectrum
1. Focus on the present.
Remember to only focus on what needs to be done right now. As people with autism, it can become easy for us to worry about either the future or the past, even if we are in a new situation. Focusing on what we need to get done in the moment, whether it’s going to a job interview or walking home from school, is the most important thing that will help us stay calm.
2. Look for supportive figures.
Try to find a support person. For a lot of people with autism, it can be hard to have a lot of friends, but even a college profes ..read more

Autism Diagnosis as an Adult
by James Malone Kirkendall
Hello, my name is James and I want to voice my struggles and successes with others that are suffering from mental illness and developmental issues. Ever since I was little I knew something was off. I was always told throughout my life that I seemed like a calm person, however that was far from the truth. The wheels were always turning in my head.
In school I struggled a lot with my learning disability. I always could remember in second grade when we started doing multiplication assignments. All the other kids seemed to be grasping the nu ..read more
