I'm so excited to share with you this amazing planter from Step2...  Step2 makes fantastic products for kids - you know the playhouses, slides, climbers water tables, etc? Well, they have branched into garden products now. When they reached out to do a collaboration, I was so excited and began planning my vision to use it to use it as a place to plant the seeds I brought from Washington State to California. It arrived super-fast and very well packaged. I will say this was super easy to put together. It came a with step-by-step manual which simplified the process and literally took min ..read more

So excited to share that my husband and i purchased a home in La Quinta California last year and officially became "Snowbirds". I've enjoyed taking this place over and making it our own. However, doing so has had its own set of challenges. No, we did not sell Fishtail Cottage in Bothell, Washington we will plan to maintain both homes with lots of help. However, I will continue to soley manage the gardens at Fishtail Cottage. I find it very scary to trust all my blood sweat tears and work to anyone.  I really hoped I could transform my go to household style into a mid-century modern d ..read more

Mill on the Floss Rose
Fishtail Cottage

Mill on the Floss is a new rose introduced by David Austin in 2020. It shares clusters of fruity flowers and is said to be a repeat bloomer. This large shrub is said to grow 4 feet tall and wide. I planted it on the flagstone path behind English Boxwoods between Connie’s Sandstorm and Bubble Bath rose shrubs. This rose seems to be happy in morning shade and afternoon hot sun. I am looking forward to seeing it established for me in the future and plan to add an obelisk for it to grow on… for me it has grown much taller than anticipated. I expect to see more blooms next year and use as ..read more

Wollerton Old Hall Rose

Wollerton Old Hall is a gorgeous David Austin rose introduced in 2011. I have this beauty planted on the East side of my backyard garden bed. This rose is the epitome of an English Rose. The blooms are amazingly fragrant with an old rose scent. It blooms later in the season for me than other roses. This rose is considered a climbing rose, but I am keeping it as a shrub approximately 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide in my landscape. It is in semi shade under a Honey Locust Tree.  This particular part of my garden is planted very densely and the roots of everything planted in this space ..read more

Spring Hill Nursery Garden Peonies

It's definitely peony season here in my landscape...so many gorgeous varieties for not only enjoying outside as I walk the garden, but also for cut flowers to bring inside to enjoy. This spring, early summer here in the Seattle area has been filled with so much rain. everything is a bit watered down which has weighed most of the foliage and heavy blooms of my peonies down. So, cutting and bringing them inside to enjoy is most important this year.  The most common variety of peonies we all see in most gardens is the herbaceous peonies that are all pictured below.  This type of ..read more

Winchester Cathedral Rose

Winchester Cathedral is a David Austin rose that was originally planted on the top tier of the rose terrace in my landscape. The 10 or so roses over time did not do well. In 2020 I removed all of the roses in that area and relocated the remaining roses to different locations in my landscape. Winchester Cathedral roses now resides on each side of a Gertrude Jekyll in the Patio Garden. Another one has been placed right on the corner of the covered patio lining the flagstone pathway. I really wanted to salvage these roses to use as cut flowers for arrangements. The new locations have all ..read more

Spirit of Freedom Rose

Spirit of Freedom is a rose I have struggled with. This rose was introduced in 2002 by David Austin. I planted two years ago (own root) and it didn’t survive. The nursery replaced it with another and that one did not thrive, so that same nursery gave me a third one to try – this third one was more established which I believe will be successful. The rose is planted in the Secret Garden growing inside of a white obelisk. I think that the height has made a difference because of the density of plantings in this space. I moved the other that was barely alive to the front entrance garden ga ..read more

Vineyard Song Rose which was bred by Ralph S. Moore and introduced to the United States in 1999 boasts large clusters of double violet blooms that appear on new wood, so I definably prune this shrub more often.  I have this shrub planted in what I call the “Patio Garden” behind the fireplace of our covered patio. It is situated under a gorgeous Rose of Sharon which means it does get more shade in the later summer than in the earlier spring/summer timeframe. This rose is probably one of the most fragrant roses in my landscape – l love that its planted close to our outdoor seating ..read more

Autumn Sunset Rose

Autumn Sunset Rose (Weeks Rose) is a climber that we purchased in memory of 9 baby ducklings that showed up in our backyard with their momma in 2010.  One by one nature took them away, in the end the momma duck walked in misery around the backyard calling for her babies until she finally flew away.  This rose is planted on a pole with a birdhouse on top in the Secret Garden honoring those babies because it was important for my children at the time. This climbing rose blooms are double ruffles both this orange color along with a light yellow mix – both of which symbolize ..read more

Souvenir de la Malmaison

Souvenir de la Malmaison is a cherished old rose that I have growing on the picket fence that boarders the flagstone pathway on the West side of my home. It had been disease free for years that only produced the most fragrant roses. This bourbon rose is approximately 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide along the fence.  This space is in morning shade but hot afternoon sunshine which is why I believe this rose shrub thrives. This rose does like to be pruned which promotes new growth. On one side of this rose is planted Excellenz Von Sheubert and I plan to plant the Ancient Mariner on the ..read more
