Which should I learn.

I am an intermediate piano player. The most complex pieces I have played until now are Moonlight Sonata Mvt. 1&2, Ballade Pour Adeline, and Anitra's Dance. I am interested in doing something classical that offers a good technical challenge. My instructor said that they are fine with anything of my choosing. There is no particular time constraint as to when I need to learn it by. I find Claire de Lune and Liebestraume No. 3 very interesting, but want some more ideas as to whether they are realistic and for some other great classical pieces. submitted by /u/HistoryLover1944 [visit reddit ..read more

Does anyone unconsciously play the tune they’re listening to with their fingers?

Like I do this a lot in the car. While I’m listening to music—it doesn’t have to be classical or a piano piece, it could be pop—I find my fingers playing the music as if on a piano. Does every piano player do this? submitted by /u/LVBsymphony9 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is LRSM worth the money?

For context I have Grade 8 distinction and ARSM distinction. I would be ready to take the exam in anywhere from a year to two years time. My question is, what would I gain from taking the LRSM and hopefully getting merit/distinction? I learned a lot through the ARSM (first diploma) and performing for a half hour my chosen repertoire on a grand piano was a fulfilling experience. However the LRSM is only available to be taken online via video submission, and the price is much steeper (£400). For reference, my current repertoire includes: beethoven sonata no 21 (Waldstein) and no 9 (E major), bo ..read more

Hi folks, 44-year old beginner here. I am teaching myself to play the piano and am going through Faber's Piano Adventures. My goal is to be able to read and play sheet music (right now I'm interested in playing songs from Final Fantasy VII, such as simplified versions of the main overworld theme and Tifa's theme). I am also really interested in learning to sight-read, and have been practicing with an app (Notes Trainer) on my iPad. The app has a feature where I can tell it to randomly generate notes on a grand staff (within a specified range for bass and treble clefs), then connect the iPad t ..read more

Sheet reading, rhythm and dynamic

Hi there! I’m a beginner piano player who started taking it seriously about 4 months ago. I can read the notes of the sheet and make some sense of the duration of the notes. But I cannot play it with the dynamics and the rhythm of the song without actually listening to it first. I assume this is normal for a beginner, so my question goes to the advanced players. Can you guys learn how to play a song without listening it first? Is this something I should work towards? submitted by /u/natttsss [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
