Any East Asian divers? Mask recommendations for tiny noses?

Most scuba diving masks have a huge nose area, because most people in the world have big noses and the big scuba brands are European, which obviously make items to fit their demographic. I've been diving for over a decade and always bought whatever mask was on sale, because I really didn't care that much, but on my last dive I was suddenly overcome with extreme annoyance at having to pinch several times to find my nose with all the extra plastic in the nose area LOL. Any divers with small noses have recommendations for a dive mask? I know there are masks for small faces, low-volume masks, etc ..read more

Dizziness and nausea during ascent ?
Reddit » Scuba

So doing my rescue diver course and doing most training exercises on a shore dive with about 4-8 meter depths . Last week as I was ascending from 4 meters I started getting dizzy at around 0.5m from the surface , and for about 30 min after being on the surface . Anyway I thought it was a fluke so did a dive today also at 4m for some more rescue exercises . And on ascent again under a meter away from the surface more dizziness and then nausea. Anyone experience this ? Read some forums that’s say it could be alternobaric vertigo. If it is what have you done to solve this ? submitted by /u/Heav ..read more

Can someone explain this article to me?

I was recently in Hawaii where we did a lot of snorkeling - no diving due to me being pregnant. So of course my mom just sent me this article and I’m having a hard time understanding this. I know this is not diving related but I looked at a few different articles and to me this seems like someone potentially unfit to snorkel overexterting themselves. But this article and others bring up the plane travels effect on the lungs. This makes sense to me for scuba but not snorkeling. And the recommended wait time of 3 days after a flight to even snorkel just is not adding up to me. Although unfo ..read more

Scariest dive you’ve ever done?

I’ve been in low viz, high seas, and ripping currents, but for me it was a raging down current on the USAT Liberty shore dive in Bali. My wife and I started our dive and everything was calm and clear, but as we neared the 110ft mark and our turn point a store had kicked up and suddenly we were being sucked down the slope. We literally had to swim as hard as possible from one part of the wreck to the next, duck out of the current to catch our breath, then repeat all the way on a zig zag pattern up the wreck. The surge got worse to the point that you could see fish getting sucked into the holes ..read more

Movies: The Dive (2023) and Breaking Surface (2020). Thoughts?

I just recently watched both of these movies, the former based on the latter, so both nearly identical in plot. Anyone else watched them? I thought it was one of the rare disaster movies based around diving that didn't have many scuba related factual inaccuracies. Like they go into issues about DCS as one of the plot points, etc. Thoughts? submitted by /u/shak_attacks [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Most frivolous / useless SCUBA accessories?

In today's consumption driven economy, there's a lot of trash being pushed to newbies in just about any hobby. This includes SCUBA. What are the most idiotic, frivolous, or otherwise useless accessories you have seen? I'd like to have a good laugh. My own contributions are tank bangers and shakers, which I discovered exist today. I don't see any advantage over just using a bolt snap that you're probably carrying already. I also ran into a dive mask with integrated camera. Seems terrible and gimmicky, and there's no way to see what you actually shoot, and it's harder to get the camera close to ..read more

Chickened out of discovery dive… but I feel like maybe I made the right choice. Did I?

Sorry, this is long. My husband and I are in the Maldives and there’s a dive shop at the resort. They have PADI certification courses and certified instructors. They also have “try dives” which I guess are like discovery dives in the house reef. For context, I had a near-drowning experience as a child and I’ve been uncomfortable at best, fearful at worst, in situations that remind me of that experience (mostly the feeling of water surrounding my face). I can swim (I went for lessons when I was a kid) but whenever I have to swim I choose backstroke to avoid the feeling of water around my face ..read more

Extra boney growth in mouth causes pain with regulators

So, I’m one of those lucky folks that has extra boney growths in my gums below my teeth. I went to the dentist today, they called them “tori”. Anyway, this knowledge lit a lightbulb in my brain. I tend to have very sore gums after I dive. Nothing that will stop me from diving, but enough to be uncomfortable especially after multiple days in a row of diving. Does anyone else have these? Do you have a regulator that doesn’t constantly rub on them? How do you manage? submitted by /u/classiccourtney [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Scuba Gear Help

Hi all, just recently I got into Scuba diving, my first pool session with SSI is next week. I was just wondering if any of you more seasoned divers could give me recommendations on gear I should look into getting. I already have Fins, boots gloves and a weight belt. I mostly a new wetsuit as mines a 3/2 Furnace Comp for surfing, a BCD and regulator. What brands should I look into? Also I hear that some people are now using free dive suits over dedicated scuba suits as they’re more comfortable. submitted by /u/BodhiBoadshorts [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
