what do you think, when (the earliest after it’s past leather hard) this thing will be crack safe to put in a kiln? having some b-day present pressing matters. p.s. that black spot is not a crack. p.p.s. i have small hands :-)

How do you translate the shrink rate of clay to 3D objects? For example if a freshly thrown mug has a capacity of say 500 ml, what will be the capacity once fired at say 12% shrinkage?
Asking as I constantly find myself surprised at how small objects end up after firing, it seems a lot more than 12% visually and I suspect that’s because is a 3D object that is shrinking rather than just a flat item.

Hi artists! I am a hobby ceramist and I have a question I'm hoping anyone knows the answer to!
I make ceramics at a community center under the guidance of a partially self taught teacher. I've been doing this for a year now, all was well until recently. We didn't change anything on the kiln program, however recently two weird things have been starting to happen:
1) all our glazes crack after a while. We glaze fire at 1040°C and we let the kiln cool until under 50°C before we take them out. We didn't use new glaze, we don't apply extremely thick. It's all the same as before but everything ..read more

Soooooo I kinda hate using the wheel and glazing so here I am hand building! Been trying more intricate patterns with nerikomi and it's addicting! Porcelain is just so beautiful (and unforgiving) and it's been an exercise in patience!
So many possibilities! And the patterns go all the way through the piece - which makes me so happy all I have to go is use clear or coat with Liquid Quartz.
The items are all porcelain, cone 10, inclusion stains for most color that isn't black. Community studio.

I reclaim my cone 6 clay on large terracotta planters. Today, I noticed a few tiny specks of terracotta flaked off of the planter and are now in the reclaim. Will this cause issues in the kiln?
I don’t care about the purity of the clay - it’s already a mixture of all the clays I’ve used in the past. I’m more concerned with if the terracotta will explode in the kiln, the same way bits of plaster does?
