Almost passed out doing CPR...what is your story of CPR not going well?

I am a new grad nurse and I did CPR on a patient for the first time last night and I am dissapointed with myself. When I had the opportunity to help with compressions I got in place and started but couldn't last the two minutes. Everyone always said it would be much harder than practice and the patient was a larger individual. I wanted to try again and the second time doing compressions I felt my head start pounding and felt like I was going to pass out. I threw up twice over the next hour or so and was sent home early. My coworkers were awesome and really supportive. I'm trying not to let th ..read more

California Nurse ratio - need help

I work at a huge level 1 hospital that does not follow staffing ratios in the ER mainly but upstairs. We have put in daily complaints to CDPH without any resolution or response. Our sister hospital is just as bad. Does anyone know any other way to force our hospital to follow state law? We’re 10-12 pts per nurse in some areas. It’s to the point that we’ll just straight up find dead bodies in the hallway. We’re grasping at straws here. submitted by /u/Donald_Dumptruck76 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I, a 22M, am almost done with nursing school. I graduate and get pinned in 2 weeks. I was thinking my about this the other day and started to think about how quickly the past two and a half years flew by. And then, this wave of sadness overcame me because the friends I’ve made along the way are all going their separate directions, some back home and others to new states. Yes, nursing school is hard, probably the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. But through the friends I’ve made, it’s actually been fun and I don’t regret it all. We’ve been through a ton together, including studying all nigh ..read more

Is the saying “nurses eat their young” true?

First-year nursing student here! My professor had a discussion about this the other day and I was wondering, why is it so prevalent in nursing? Is it that bad that new grads quit only 1-2 years into their career? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t see it happening as much with doctors and residents compared to nursing. Is it because the industry is mainly women? Is it because of stress? Is it just a vicious cycle that will continue bc they were mistreated when they were new grads and had to “suck it up.” submitted by /u/TheNeonRose_ [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How annoyed do nurses get when you press the call button?

So recently I had a stay at the pediatric neurosurgery special care unit, and they always told me if I needed something to press the button, but I was wondering are they saying that to make me feel good, or do they mean that. So essentially how annoying is the call button? submitted by /u/AidensAdvice [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Going the psych route

I'm considering switching into the psych field out of my current new grad program in med surg. I was never too excited about doing med surg but I thought I might want to do critical care like the ICU in the future. But the stress of the extremely high needs of my patients has been overwhelming me, and so I don't think Ill be progressing to the ICU. I've discussed it with my management and program and they have been supportive, indicating that if I choose to switch fields then they will try to help me in finding a new job. Ironically given my current stress, I am looking at psych as a good opt ..read more

This is just to vent! Don’t kill me lol. I’m an ICU nurse of 6 years… I’ve worked stepdown and medsurg tele as well. Im sure this is nothing new and many people might be able to relate but why are SOME of these new grad ICU nurses so cocky???? We have SEVERAL on my unit that just have this “savior complex”. They think they know everything, critique MD orders like they would’ve ordered something else. They only want the intubated sedated patients, HATE anybody that doesn’t have a tube coming out of every orifice of their body. They try to include themselves in every single code blue and try to ..read more

Nurse Residency Interview; Feels like it was the good old bait and switch

I applied for a nurse residency position. Got accepted for an interview for the ICU residency (yay!!). The interview was via Zoom. The nurse residency coordinator and a Med Surg manager (not listed on my interview panel) showed up, but none of the ICU managers who were originally listed on the interview email as my interview panel showed up (red flag). Oh, and the Med Surg manager showed up late. Pretty much the entire interview was spent telling me as a new grad "I really needed to work at least a year med surg before I considered critical care". When asked if I would accept a med surg posit ..read more
