Today we mark the 12th Annual March for Choice on International Safe Abortion Day. We call for Abortion to be recognised as essential healthcare – on Demand and Without Apology. We stand in solidarity with our siblings in the North, who have also assembled today, calling for free, safe, legal, and local abortion services across the whole island. We are here today, 5 years on from Repeal, because of the barriers that still remain. “For our foremothers, for ourselves, the generations yet to come. Witches or women, these are our bodies which shall not be given up.” Many were deeply moved back th ..read more

Abortion is Healthcare and must be available to all who need it, without restriction,
says Abortion Rights Campaign
The Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) marked International Safe Abortion Day outside Dáil Eireann, highlighting that significant barriers remain when accessing abortion care in Ireland. While reproductive rights are increasingly under attack worldwide, our government continually fails to provide free, safe, legal, local and accessible abortion services for all who need them.
Speaking ahead of the 12th Annual March for Choice, ARC co-convener Richael Carroll said, “Abortion is healt ..read more

The Abortion Rights Campaign welcomes the general scheme of the Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services (Safe Access Zones)) Bill, which was published on the 5th August 2022. The bill clearly outlines actions that are prohibited and sets out penalties for non-compliance with future law. We look forward to the enactment of this bill which will create a robust legal framework to guide our criminal justice system if and when protests continue.
We are confident that the comprehensive nature of the bill is in part a result of consistent pressure from the many reproductive rights activists ..read more

The Abortion Rights Campaign welcomes the news that at least 6,700 people were able to access safe and legal abortion within Ireland last year. Abortion is an essential part of sexual and reproductive health for hundreds of thousands of women, girls, trans men and non-binary people who can become pregnant in this country.
Commenting on the figures, ARC spokesperson Helen Stonehouse said: “The amount of abortions carried out in Ireland last year underscores the consistent demand for quality, accessible abortion care in every county. Overall, the number of abortions is broadly similar to 2019 a ..read more

The Abortion Rights Campaign condemns the news that the Supreme Court in the US has overturned a 50-year constitutional right to abortion access. Thirteen states have “abortion trigger bans”, making abortion illegal as soon as Roe v. Wade is overturned, with 26 states expected to move quickly to outlaw abortion.
“Abortion bans are racist, they are misogynistic, and fallout from this decision will be catastrophic,” says ARC spokesperson Darina Murray. “We in Ireland know how an abortion ban creates stigma, isolation, causes long-term damage to health and even death. We also know that abortion ..read more

Figures released by the UK Department of Health show that four people per week leave Ireland to have an abortion abroad, and one person per day leaves the island of Ireland. 367 people gave addresses in Ireland, North and South when having an abortion in England or Wales in 2021. 206 people travelled from the Republic, and 161 from Northern Ireland. By any objective analysis, the government has failed to deliver on the straightforward demands of the Irish people in 2018 to stop exporting abortion care to Britain.
“Every person forced to travel for abortion care did so during the waves of Covi ..read more

Today we sent the below to RTÉ in response to the transphobia broadcast on Liveline this week. We stand with the trans, non-binary and intersex community today and every day.
The Abortion Rights Campaign would like to register our disgust at the framing of the “debate” on transgender rights during yesterday’s Liveline programme. The Abortion Rights Campaign stands in full solidarity with the trans community in Ireland in the face of this organised and coordinated attack, facilitated by the national broadcaster during Pride month.
These attacks should not be viewed in isolation but as part of a ..read more
