I am teaching an Art History class and we just went through the timeline. I would like to talk about contemporary art now since many of them are great artists and will undoubtedly try to work in the art world. I would like to give perspective on some of the problems with accessibility, patriarchy, and colonialism in the art world. They might also be interested in how art is valued and sold. Thank you! submitted by /u/Winter-Ad-1052 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

MFA concern: sharing our progress to class hindering creativity?

So I’m gonna do an MFA in textile design. I am worried about one thing: how weekly you should show your progress to whole class and teacher. At least at the beginning of the process. This last year I’ve been creating in my own and realized I enjoy the process of creating solo and not sharing my process. I’m easily influenced by others and also insecure AF lol. Starting to think the whole art school setting may not be the right setting for me to create … Though of course I am 100% more productive when working under pressure and having some sort of structure … I’m just worried about the purely ..read more

And what was the show? I’m traveling to Brussels from UK for a few hours purely to see Joan Semmel’s show at Xavier Hufkens. I’ve never seen her work in person before and as a huge fan, I can’t wait. Excited to hear about your pilgrimages! submitted by /u/n0nostalgia [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Alternatives to frames for displaying large works on paper

Hi, I'm looking into different ways to display works on paper in larger sizes (approx 35"x50"/90x125 cm). I've been exploring mounting the work on a board or stretcher, but since I use wet media, I'm concerned about the necessary spray varnish damaging or minimizing the impact of the drawing. Does anybody have experience with acrylic/plexi frames? This looks like it could be an interesting way to display the work without overwhelming it with a heavy frame, but in this case, I'm worried about the plexi looking cheap. Here are some examples (forgive me for using Apartment Therapy as a resource ..read more

I’m writing about the Archival turn in the 90s and the relation between the archive and the function of photographs as archival art, I would like to investigate wether the technological development of the media of the camera has changed the way in which photography matter as archival evidence. I would appreciate any useful source or idea ! submitted by /u/SnooOpinions8540 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Alternatives to art school (MA/MFA)

I just got into a Masters program for an art school which is mostly art history focused, especially contemporary art. Like most schools, it is quite expensive. I have zero background in art. I am a very new artist, but I am heartened that a few people I have spoken to – – including a curator I respect at a significant museum – – have been encouraging and "get" my work. At art school, my goals were threefold: develop a community (and meet fun and weird artists), learn about art history and the context into which I am working, and develop technical skills like painting, installations, artificia ..read more

I've tried to find a list of all the winners of the International Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, but I've hit a roadblock. I can't seem to find an organized archive that lists all the winners in one place. Does anyone know where I can find a comprehensive list of all the Venice Biennale winners? submitted by /u/Ok-Memory2809 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
