Most martial artists at some point in their life discover a spark of understanding that goes beyond the learning and usage of combative technique sequences alone. In fact, using Hapkido as an example, all the techniques you learn (and there are hundreds) tend to be dwelled upon as the star of this self-defensive training program. We tend to get caught up in the techniques and their proper execution, but maybe fail to see that there is a greater understanding, a more intrinsic value to a self-defensive martial art.  Sooner or later through martial arts self-defensive training progra ..read more

I usually (attempt to) stay away from confrontational topics on our Phoenix Dragon Martial Arts blog, but with our USRT (Urban Survival Response Training) seminar coming up and the presidential race in full swing, I felt compelled to at least address a concerning issue. First, a little background on our program to put this post into perspective. It was only two blocks up Pike street so we walked, knowing it was only two more blocks to get to our hotel ..read more

By definition, in combative terms, a level of force is the reasonable amount and/or type of force applied for a given confrontational situation. Most professions that deal with bad guys have their own, more specific definition of the level of force and when they can or cannot employ a subsequent, greater degree or level. For instance, Law Enforcement (LE) practice what they call a Force Continuum which helps define each level and when stronger use of force is warranted.   In the civilian world, it is important to understand the circumstances underlying a conflict and what level of force is dee ..read more
