String recommendations?

Hi! I talked my luthier on Monday about my whistling E string. We discussed a bit about strings in general. Normally I use Dominant G, D, A and Pirastro Gold E on my violin, but he recommended other sets, like Thomastik Vision, Vision Solo, or Larsen Il Cannone. I'd like to change my strings in a few weeks, I have these on since last November. Normally I'd put on the usual set, but my luthier made me curious about trying something new. The last time I tried something new was a set of Pirastro Tonica a year ago, but it was a disaster on my student violin. I've tried Evah Pirazzis, too (bought ..read more

Violin bow tension

Hi, tomorrow is the mark of my eighth year playing Recently I have been playing alot of faster passages using Spicatto and ricochet However, My bow seems to have lost a good number of horse hair. The gap between the middle of the concave part of the bow and the horse hair is a centimeter smaller of a pencils width. (I hope this makes any sense) I seem to be hitting the pernambuco intandom with the horse hair to a spiccato or ricochet stroke (in the middle of the bow) My question is, will a rehair tighten the tension of the bow if a number of horse hairs have been lost? Also if the gap between ..read more

Bow hand pointer finger and pressure

So recently when I practice for 60 minutes or more, the point where my bow and my right hand index finger touch starts to hurt, and it gets kind of red. It goes away the next day though. I believe that my bow hand is mostly relaxed, but I guess it's not considering my index finger pain. Am I applying pressure wrong? How am I supposed to apply pressure to the bow? submitted by /u/dante57689 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Switching between viola and violin

I'v been playing viola for about 5 years, and I would consider myself intermediate (didn't really practice a lot until about last month). I'm currently really focusing on intonation, but I also have been wanting to pick up violin in addition to viola to get access to that juicy repertoire. Would learning violin and viola be tricky for my muscle memory? How would switching between different intervals work? Would it stunt my growth in viola overall? submitted by /u/dante57689 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Anything helps. I played for 5 years before stopping for 3 years, then got back into playing electric before the pandemic hit. It's been 2 years since I've opened the case, but I miss it and I'm ready to get back. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Mistergasmoney [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m a pianist who would love to get into Violin.

Like the title says, I’m (17) a pianist and would love to get into violin while I am still young. I’ve already taught myself guitar but violin is my favorite instrument to hear. I am already taking piano lessons and won’t quick those, so I don’t have enough money for violin lessons. Is it worth learning without in person lessons? And if so, what are some ways to learn? I have a slightly higher than basic understanding of music theory. Piano players, is it easy to transfer? Guitar was extremely easy to transfer to because I play piano. Is violin similar? Thank you everyone!! submitted by /u/D ..read more
