Big swell at Freshwater bay, Isle of Wight, with only the most committed surfers making it out back in testing conditions, with some super deep take-offs as the sets were breaking outside the rock-boil at times! The Saturday night wave bouy readings (channel lightship) peaked at 22.5ft at 12 seconds with a solid 14ft – 17ft still showing for most of Sunday itself with fairly light Northerly (offshore) winds. Not saying this was a 14ft swell on the isle of wight, but i reckon we saw some solid 6-8ft groundswell at times and i saw plenty of double overhead waves being ridden. It’s been over a year since the last surfing photo blog, not because i don’t love surfing or taking photos, but there’s just not usually time for both. Great light and great waves persuaded me to get the camera out again. The pics might make it look a bit tame at times, but there was some good surfing and great action from a strong local crew in testing conditions with the bigger sets way overhead. It’s been a solid week of swell on the Isle of Wight with strong easterlies making for some “interesting” days on the SW facing coastline. Here’s a few photos from an early morning session at Freshwater Bay on Friday 14th December. Good test for the camera too, shooting fast moving subjects in the gloom before the sun managed to peek through the clouds. A few shots from the early afternoon of March 11th 2018 (Mothers Day), shot from the window of a camper van whilst waiting for the second surf of the day. Not the greatest photos, or the best of the swell that day, but it was the time I was there and able to snap a few. Got up at 4.45am to catch it first light, swell was peaking in the morning with 8ft at ten seconds on the bouys translating to some well overheard sets in a strong offshore / cross shore wind (which felt like the winds in fuerteventura but with added ice-cream headaches instead of sunburn). Long time no blog, so I’m back with a few pics from a fun little winter session at Freshwater Bay. The day had started with a challenging surf at Compton fields in the morning, decent head-high waves and a cold / strong 24mph NW wind (cross-offshore) which held the waves up nicely but made going left almost impossible on my 7’6”. But some fun rights were to be had, the sun was shining and there was only two people in, sadly no photos as i was surfing!
